'Polish Messi' to leave Liverpool this summer

Liverpool youngster Mateusz Musialowski looks set to leave Anfield this summer when his contract expires, after failing to establish himself in Liverpool's first team.

Dubbed the 'Polish Messi' due to his low centre of gravity and excellent dribbling skills, Klopp and his coaching staff had high hopes for Musialowski when he arrived in 2020, but he will now look to develop his career at another club.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Jurgen Klopp's time at Liverpool, aside from winning lots of football matches, has been watching the development of young players, many of whom have gone on to become household names.

Players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Caoimhim Kelleher, and Harvey Elliott have all become established first-team players under Jurgen Klopp, while this season a whole new raft of talented youngsters have been given their chance to shine, with Jarell Quansah, Bobby Clark, Conor Bradley, and Jayden Danns all appearing to have bright futures at Anfield.

For Mateusz Musialowski however, the future is far less certain, with the Polish Under-21 International failing to impress Klopp and his coaches, and now looking like he will leave the club when his contract expires on the 1st of June.

Huge potential, so what went wrong?

Signed in August 2020, Musialowski arrived with a growing reputation as an exciting attacker with immense skill and dribbling ability.  Those skills were soon evident, as Musialowski scored a stunning solo goal against Newcastle Under-18s in March 2021, before going on to score over 30 goals at Under-18 and Under-21 level over the next two seasons.

His low centre of gravity, quick feet, and excellent dribbling ability soon led to him being dubbed the 'Polish Messi', with plenty of YouTube videos showcasing his talents.

But while other Academy players such as Kaide Gordon, Rhys Williams, and Conor Bradley were either getting called up to the first-team squad or gaining experience out on loan, Musialowski remained at Anfield, performing well for the youth teams, but unable to force his way into Jurgen Klopp's plans.  Instead, it was another left-footed attacking midfielder - Harvey Elliott - who would grab the headlines and establish himself in the Liverpool first-team.  Signed a year earlier than Musialowski, Elliott has now made over 100 appearances for the club, while the young Pole has just one senior Liverpool appearance to his name, and that was as a second-half substitute against Sparta Prague when Liverpool were already 5 - 1 up.

Plenty of interest from European clubs

With the door to the first team seemingly shut, and his contract expiring in a few months, it is little surprise that Musialowski will be leaving Liverpool.

The club has a huge summer ahead of it, with a new manager replacing Jurgen Klopp, new coaches and Sporting Directors arriving, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, and Mo Salah entering the final 12 months of their contracts.  A new contract for a 20-year-old with only one substitute appearance to his name was never going to be high on the list of priorities, so Musialowski will need to look elsewhere to continue his career, with reports suggesting that plenty of smaller European clubs will be interested.

Indeed, Musialowski's agent has previously spoken of his client moving away from Liverpool, and there was talk of a January move to Leeds or Birmingham - though nothing ever materialised.

Speaking last November, Musialowski's agent, Cezary Kucharski, told reporters,

"We signed a contract with the condition that I would not persuade him to return to Poland."

"I don't want to persuade him to return to Poland, but he has the most offers from his homeland. Most clubs want him. I think it should go to the Netherlands, Belgium, or maybe Switzerland."

Where the talented youngster ends up remains to be seen, but everyone at LFC - Back On Our Perch wishes Mateusz all the best for his future career.
