Liverpool FC Women sign Canadian International Olivia Smith

Liverpool FC Women have made their first summer signing, with Canadian International striker, Olivia Smith, joining the Reds from Sporting CP - subject to international clearance.

The striker signed her contract at the AXA Melwood Training Centre on Tuesday, before stating that joining Liverpool was a 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity'.

Matt Beard and his backroom staff were delighted at the unveiling of Liverpool FC women's new signing, Olivia Smith, on Tuesday afternoon, with the exciting 19-year-old international arriving on Merseyside with a glowing reputation and massive potential.

Smith, who has represented Canada 19 times, will add pace and physicality to the Liverpool forward line, where she can operate anywhere across the front three.

After excelling at youth level, Smith became Canada's youngest-ever player back in 2019, when she represented her country at just 15 years and 94 days of age.  After representing Penn State University in the USA, Smith earned a move to Europe last summer, signing for Sporting CP, where she produced an outstanding season, registering 13 goals and 9 assists from just 18 games, before being named the league's 'Best Young Player' and 'Revelation Player'.

That form, coupled with her direct style of play, brought her to the attention of Liverpool FC Women's manager Matt Beard, who did not hesitate to sign the youngster when the opportunity arose.

Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, Matt Beard was delighted to have completed the signing,

"A lot of work has gone into it, we've been monitoring her now for the last year-and-a-half. I'm really excited, fans should be excited by her as well. She's a fantastic talent, a great personality as well. Hopefully we can see that personality and that talent on the pitch."

Smith will wear the no.11 shirt for LFC.

"I think now that I'm finally here in the facility, I got to see a little bit of Liverpool, I absolutely love it and I'm super-excited."

It's definitely a prestigious club as a whole and also for my dad it's very important for him – this is the club he's been watching and following since he was younger. So, it's very cool to actually be a part of this thing and get this opportunity."

"Realistically, it's really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and that's why I felt like I needed to make this the best one and I had to take advantage of this one. I'm super-excited."

Smith also explained where she likes to play, and what makes her a player to watch,

"I would describe myself as a very creative player. I love to go one-v-one and with that, I love to shoot and I have a very attacking mindset to create opportunities, not only for myself but for others."

"My favourite position is probably as a 10 or a winger. But realistically I can play anywhere in the front."
