Calvin Ramsey joins Wigan Athletic on loan
Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsey is set for another season away from Anfield, after agreeing to a season-long loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic.
After another injury-plagued season in 2023/24, where he made only three appearances, the youngster will be looking to regain his fitness and rebuild his career, in what may be his last chance to impress the coaches at Liverpool.
It's fair to say that things have not gone to plan for Calvin Ramsey since his move from Aberdeen two years ago.
Signed in the summer of 2022 for £6million, the youngster was seen as the perfect understudy for Trent Alexander-Arnold, having won the SWFA Young Player of the Year Award, after a breakout season with Aberdeen, where he played 28 games and scored 1 goal.
A strong athlete who was comfortable going forward, as well as defending, coaches and fans had high hopes for Ramsey, with a suggestion that he would become the Red's first choice right-back when Alexander-Arnold made the inevitable move into midfield.
Sadly, a series of injuries have blighted Ramsey's development, with the Scotland Under-21 International making just 8 appearances in the last 2 years - with only 2 of those coming in the red shirt of Liverpool.
During that period, Jurgen Klopp promoted many youngsters from the Academy, with Conor Bradley excelling at right-back in the second half of last season, moving ahead of Ramsey in the pecking order, and raising further questions over the long-term future of Ramsey at Anfield.
With Jurgen Klopp now departed, many were expecting players such as Ramsey to get a fresh start under new boss Arne Slot, but the Reds have recently confirmed the defender will once again go out on loan – this time to Wigan Athletic – for the 2024/25 season.
Calvin Ramsey excited to get started at new club
Speaking to Latics TV, Ramsey explained his motivation behind joining Wigan, and his desires for the upcoming season.
"I'm just excited for the start of the season, really. When I was driving up to the training ground, there was a real excitement."
"I don't know what it was, just hungry to get going, show everyone what I can do and probably prove a few people wrong who have been saying a few things or doubting me."
"It's a good opportunity, a good club and I'm ready to go."
"It's been almost a year, and I've been at Preston and that, when I was out injured going to the games all the time, seeing the boys playing, doing well and you miss it."
"Now I’m back, fully fit, ready to get a good pre-season under me, go to Hungary for a week, some warm-weather training, come back, have a few friendlies, then the season will be right around the corner."
"I'm looking forward to it."
"I think my two main goals would be to play as many games as I can – and play well – then also to be challenging to get into the top six or even the top two automatic promotion places."
