• Pep Lijnders reportedly in talks with Ajax to become their new manager in the summer

Shortly after Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement that he was leaving Liverpool, Pep Lijnders and the rest of the coaching staff confirmed that they too would be leaving for pastures new.

And whilst Klopp's announcement grabbed most of the headlines, the news that Lijnders was also leaving came as a double blow for Liverpool and its fans.

For many, Lijnders would have been the ideal man to take over from Klopp, given his close working relationship with the players and staff, as well as his excellent tactical knowledge.  In much the same way that Paisley took over from Shankly, Lijnders could have succeeded Klopp, continuing the work already underway, but putting his own stamp on Liverpool's playing style.

Sadly, that possibility now seems unlikely, with reports this evening suggesting that Lijnders is in discussions with Dutch giants Ajax, to become their new manager in the summer.

Lijnders keen to forge his own path

Lijnders joined Liverpool as a coach in 2014, working first with Brendan Rodgers, and then Jurgen Klopp.  Under Klopp however, Lijnders has taken on much more responsibility, moving up to the position of Assistant Manager.

Lijnders has already left Liverpool once, back in 2018, when he became manager of NEC - who also play in the Dutch leagues.  Lijnders joined the club in January 2018 but left in May that year, after failing to guide the team to promotion.  He was quickly welcomed back at Liverpool by Klopp and has become an integral part of the team that has led Liverpool to Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup successes.

Despite his difficulties at NEC, Lijnders has retained a desire to manage a club himself and create his own legacy away from Klopp and Liverpool. It looks like that chance might come fairly quickly if tonight's reports are true, with Ajax looking for a new coach to start in the summer, ahead of the 2024/25 season.
