Mbappe agrees five-year Madrid deal

Mbappe agrees five-year Madrid deal

French superstar Kylian Mbappe has finally ended months of speculation about his future, by agreeing to join Real Madrid in a five-year deal with £200million.

  • French striker agrees 5-year contract with Real Madrid
  • The deal will be signed in June, as soon as the player becomes a free agent
  • Mbappe has been earning a whooping £70million a season at PSG
  • Madrid contract is worth more that £200million over 5 years

After months (and months) of speculation, Kylian Mbappe has finally agreed on a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, ending any lingering hopes Liverpool may have had of signing the superstar in the summer.

Although he is yet to officially sign a contract, the striker has already informed PSG of his intentions to join Madrid on a free transfer in June, once his current deal at PSG ends.

Mbappe has been at PSG since 2017 and has scored an incredible 244 goals in just 291 appearances.  He is PSG's all-time leading goalscorer, has won every title available in French football, and is a World Cup winner with France.

The announcement brings to an end a long-running saga that has seen Mbappe continually linked with Liverpool, despite the obvious financial problems the Reds would face.

Liverpool's interest in the striker began back in the summer of 2017 when Mbappe was still a Monaco player.  Indeed, Liverpool were so keen on signing the teenager, that owner John Henry had a 2-hour meeting with the player and his family on his private jet, in an attempt to convince him to join the Reds instead of PSG.  Sadly that never happened, with Mbappe joining PSG in a deal worth £170million.

Crazy figures meant Mbappe to Liverpool was never really going to happen

We all know that football exists in a financial bubble, where common sense and financial constraints do not exist (despite the useless FFP and PSR rules), but even so, the numbers involved in Mbappe's new deal are staggering.

  • Mbappe's basic salary will be roughly £15million a season, after tax.  That's £75million over 5-years
  • He will earn numerous bonuses for appearances, goals, titles won etc
  • He will also receive a £110million signing-on fee (to be paid over 5-years)
  • Mbappe will retain a significant percentage of his image rights, worth £millions each season

Seeing the above figures in black and white, it's obvious that Liverpool could never realistically compete with Madrid for Mbappe's signature.  Mohamad Salah is Liverpool's highest-paid player and earns roughly £350,000 a week.  That's £18million a season, so similar to Mbappe's basic wage.  There is no way that Liverpool could afford to pay another player similar wages, especially when Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk (who both earn over £200,000 a week), are due for new contracts over the summer.

Then there is his signing-on fee.  Mbappe's agents argued that because clubs did not have to pay a transfer fee, Mbappe should have a sizeable signing-on fee.  Well, £110million is a decent signing-on fee by anyone's standard.

Now that Mbappe's future is sorted, Liverpool can move forward onto genuine targets this summer, as the club looks to rebuild in the post Jurgen Klopp era.
