If you ask Reds fans which player could potentially fill Mo Salah's boots at Anfield, 99% will give you the same name - Kylian Mbappe. The French striker is at the peak of his powers, scoring 268 goals in just 356 games. He is a household name across the footballing globe, and is the kind of superstar signing Liverpool fans have been dreaming about for decades.
Liverpool were first linked with Mbappe back in 2017, when he was still a teenager at Monaco. Liverpool owner John Henry even met with Mbappe on his private jet, to try to convince the youngster to join the Reds. Sadly, despite making a good impression on the player, Henry's intervention was not enough to convince Mbappe to swap France for Anfield, with the player opting to join Paris Saint-Germain instead. PSG paid the huge sum of 180million euros, making Mbappe the most expensive teenager in world football.
Of course, Mbappe has repaid that transfer fee several times over with his goals and assists, but he now finds himself at a cross roads in his career. Despite unprecedented domestic success, PSG have failed to land the top prize in Europe - the Champions League. Even with a strikeforce of Mbappe, Messi and Neymar, PSG continually underachieve in Europe. With Messi and Neymar long gone, Mbappe is the last of PSG's famed front three, and now he too, looks like a man that wants to play somewhere else.
Of course, in a parallel dimension, Mbappe has already left PSG. In the srping of 2022, it was widely reported that Mbappe had agreed to join Real Madrid, with the Spanish side willing to pay £200million for his signature. Despite these rumours, and after much back-tracking on all sides, Mbappe decided to extend is contract in Paris, much to the anger of Real Madrid and its President, Florentino Perez. Mbappe's new deal ran for two years, with the option to extend for a third year, with the player picking up wages of nearly £1million a week. Two years later, Mbappe has confirmed that he will not take up the option of the thrid year, meaning his time in Paris will come to an end in the summer of 2024.
Mbappe free to sign with overseas clubs...
With Mbappe confirming that he will not stay with PSG, beyond the end of this season, and with his contract entering the final six months, the player is now free to negotiate with other clubs. Hence the links to Liverpool.
Whenever the possibility of Mbappe leaving PSG re-surfaces, Liverpool are always mentioned as a possible destination. Obviously, Liverpool's earlier attempts to sign the player mean they have a genuine interest, but can the Reds really afford Mbappe, with his massive wage demands, signing on fee and agent fees?
Over the past few weeks many papers, both in Spain and France, have been reporting on Mbappe, and whilst no-one can agree on where he is going, they do all agree that he will finally leave PSG this time around. Of course, we've been here before, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if PSG convinced Mbappe to sign another new deal, but lets assume that he does move this summer. Who can reallistically afford him?
Real Madrid, Man City, Chelsea or one of the Saudi Arabian teams backed by the Saudi Government can probably afford his wages. Of these, Chelsea are struggling to meet FFP regulations, after spending £1billion on new players in just one year. Manchester City have the money, even if they don't actually have the money, but they also have Haaland, who plays in the same position as Mbappe. Seeing the two players together would be many fans dream, but it is unlikely to happen, given City face their own FFP problems, and Guardiola like to play with one player up front. Mbappe himself has already ruled out moving to Saudi Arabia, as he see's it as a step down in quality - regardless of the money. So that leaves Real Madrid......and Liverpool.
Despite not having the financial muscle to complete the deal, Liverpool are not only linked with the player, many papers in Spain say we are the favourites to sign him. How this would work in reality is a mystery, but John Henry is reportedly making it his personal mission to sign Mbappe, as a statement of intent to Liverpool's rivals.
So what should we believe? Mbappe likes Liverpool, and especially Jurgen Klopp. His mum loves Liverpool. Liverpool want the player, but don't have the money....At this point in time it seems like the papers need a headline to grab peoples attention, or maybe Mbappe's agent needs to focus Madrid's attention, so is spreading the Liverpool rumours. Either way, the Mbappe to Liverpool rumours will continue, whichever team he eventually ends up at.
