More Liverpool loans cancelled, as youngsters fail to impress

Liverpool’s loan players are not having the best of times, with another two deals cancelled early, as players fail to make the most of opportunities.

Sending a young player out on loan can be a gamble.  Although every effort is made, to ensure players are matched with clubs that will benefit their character and development, sometimes things just don’t work out.

Sadly, that seems to be the case for most of the players that Liverpool sent out on loan in the summer transfer window.

Earlier in the week, Fabio Carvalho and Rhys Williams had their loan deals cut short, whilst the last 48 hours has seen the return of James Balagizi from Wigan, and Nat Phillips from Celtic.

Midfielder Balagizi made seven appearances for League One Wigan Athletic, though all of those came as a substitute, and totalled just 414 minutes of actions.  Balagizi suffered a hamstring injury in early December, so it was unlikely that he would force his way back into the Wigan first team any time soon.

Defender Phillips has also failed to impress with his loan at Celtic.  Although the deal was only for an initial six months, Celtic had the option to extend the loan until the end of the season.  With the experience Phillips gained from the 2020 – 21 season, when he was the only senior fit centreback at Anfield at times, it was expected that he would be a success north of the border.  Sadly, Phillips failed to secure a regular starting spot, making just four starts, with Celtic deciding against extending his loan.

More loan deals, or squad players at Anfield?

With Balagizi nursing an injury, it’s likely he will remain at Anfield, and once fit, see out the rest of the season with the under-21 squad.

Rhys Williams will likely move on loan again, though Liverpool will be keen to ensure that his next club give him more game time.

Carvalho and Phillips may yet feature at Anfield this season.  With Liverpool facing so many games in the coming weeks, and with injuries beginning to mount up, both players may find themselves on the bench in the coming weeks, even if it is only to make up the numbers.

More players likely to return?

Klopp and his team may have even more decisions to make in the coming days, with Calvin Ramsey enduring another frustrating season, this time at Preston North End.  The young right back was hoping to rebuild his career, after an injury ravaged campaign last season, but, like others, has found game hard to come by.

Klopp must therefore decide if it is better to let Ramsey fight for a place at Preston, or bring him back to Anfield, where he could play regularly for the under-21’s, or send him out on loan again.
