Top of the table taking shape
Whilst it is too early to start talking about a two horse race for the title, Liverpool and Arsenal are certainly positioning themselves as the teams to beat, as we head into the Christmas period.
Arsenal kicked off the mid week fixtures, and needed a dramatic 97th minute winner to beat a stubborn Luton Town. It was the kind of match Arsenal would have lost several years ago, and shows how much they have grown under Mikel Arteta. Liverpool had no such worries against Sheffield United, winning 2 - 0, but United owed much to their keeper, who made excellent saves from Salah, Nunez and Mac Allister.
Aston Villa produced the performance of the week, outplaying a poor Manchester City, to deservedly win 1 - 0. The result moves Villa ahead of City into third place, and means City have now drawn three and lost one of their last four games, their worst run for seven years.
Elsewhere, Tottenham and Newcastle both suffered further defeats - Tottenham losing to West Ham, despite taking the lead at the Tottenham Stadium. Newcastle then produced a terrible display, going down 3 - 0 to Everton at Goodison Park. The result means Everton move out of the bottom three, despite their points deduction.
Manchester United were the other big winners, beating a disjointed Chelsea team, 2 - 1. The result moves United to 6th in the table, level on points with Tottenham.
