Record league crowd at Anfield today

As expected, Liverpool have today set a new attendance record, with over 59,000 people attending the match between Liverpool and Burnley in the Premier League.

Whatever today's result, Liverpool will be celebrating a new piece of history, as the club has set a new league attendance record, with 59,896 fans attending the game against Burnley this afternoon.

After successful trials earlier in the week, the club was granted a license to open the hospitality section of the new Anfield Road Stand, allowing more fans to attend home matches.  That has resulted in today's new record.

The previous record, of 58,757, has stood since December 1949.

When the new Anfield Road expansion is complete, Anfield's capacity will stand at 61,000.  There is no official completion date for the work, although the club has made significant progress in the last couple of months, and will hope to have the stand complete before the end of the season.

That would mean that today's record could soon be broken, but until then the club can celebrate another piece of history.
