With Liverpool's first team not in Premier League action this weekend, our attention turned to Liverpool's youth teams, as the Under 18's and Under 21's both played matches.
Under 18's secure victory over Stoke City
Liverpool 3 - 1 Stoke City
AXA Training Facility
Liverpool Under 18's made the perfect start to 2024, grabbing a 3 - 1 win over Stoke City at the AXA Training Facility. Despite the visitors starting brightly, it was Liverpool who took the lead, thanks to an own goal in the first half. Stoke then equalised on the stroke of half time, as the sides went in level at the break. Into the second half, and Liverpool came out much quicker and stronger, and duly regained the lead four minutes in, when Pennington swept the ball into the net from 18 yards. The excellent finish matched the build up play, as Liverpool moved the ball from back to front with a lovely series of passes. As the second half progressed, both teams went close to scoring again, but it was Liverpool who secured the win, thanks to a 20-yard strike from Laffey in the 89th minute.
Liverpool U18s: Misciur, Pitt, Gyimah, Lucky, Furnell-Gill, Trueman, Morrison, Laffey, Sonni-Lambie, Pennington, Figueroa.
Subs: Morana, Evers, Kelly, Enahoro-Marcus, Airoboma.
Liverpool's next Under 18's match is against Arsenal, in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.
Under 21's suffer heavy defeat away at Brighton and Hove Albion
Brighton & Hove Albion 4 - 2 Liverpoo
As the saying goes, football is a game of two halves, with Liverpool's loss to Brighton a prime example of how a game can change after half time. After falling behind to an early Brighton goal, Liverpool fought back well, to lead 2 - 1 at half time, thanks to goals from Danns and Koumas. However, Brighton took control of the match in the second half, with three un-answered goals giving them a comfortable 4 - 2 victory over the young Reds.
Liverpool U21s: Mrozek, Davidson, Pinnington, Nallo, Scanlon, McConnell, Gordon, Nyoni, Clark, Danns, Koumas.
Subs: O. Kelly, Pilling, Kone-Doherty, Spearing.
Liverpool's next Under 21's match is against Fulham, in Premier League 2. The game takes place at the Kirkby Academy on Sunday 28th January 2024.
