Liverpool vs Manchester United - Premier League Head-to-Head Record

Liverpool face Manchester United later today, in one of English football's fiercest rivalries.  The Reds need a victory to maintain their title challenge, but which club has the better Head-to-Head record?   LFC - Back On Our Perch delves through the archives to find out.

There are plenty of fierce rivalries in English football, with the Merseyside derby, Manchester derby, and North London derby to name just a few.  But few games can match Liverpool vs Manchester United for passion, intensity, and energy.

It's a rivalry that spans 50 years -  but has its roots in the Industrial Revolution, and the evolution of two of the largest cities in Northern England.  It's a rivalry that brings the best out of the players, and sometimes the worst out of the fans (when will the FA finally get serious about tragedy chanting??)

Some of the world's greatest players and managers have played for the two clubs, from Dalglish, Gerrard and Salah, to Giggs, Beckham and Cantona.  Between them, the two clubs have won over 120 major honours, including 39 league titles, and whilst United has not been involved in a Premier League title race for nearly eight years, today's match will have massive repercussions for this season's title race, and Liverpool's chances of being crowned Champions in May.

Liverpool goes into today's match in good form, with recent victories against Brighton and Sheffield United moving them back to the top of the table, while United recently drew with Brentford, before suffering a last-minute collapse against Chelsea, conceding the Premier League's latest-ever goal to lose 4 - 3.

But which team has the better head-to-head record, and do such records and stats have any bearing on today's game?  Read on below to find out...

Liverpool vs Manchester United Head-to-Head Record

Liverpool and United have already met twice this season, playing out a goalless draw at Anfield in December, before United earned a last-minute win over Liverpool in the FA Cup last month.  Overall, this will be the 241st meeting between the two clubs (213 official games and 28 wartime matches).

Previous meetings (official matches): 213
Liverpool wins: 71
Man Utd wins: 83
Draws: 59

League head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 181
Liverpool wins: 61

Man United wins: 69
Draws: 51
Goals scored: 245
Goals conceded: 242

As you can see, United has a slightly better overall head-to-head record and has been more successful in league meetings between the two sides.  However, most of that success came during the 1990s and early 2000s, when United was dominant under Sir Alex Fergusen.  In more recent seasons, Liverpool have had the upper hand, with Jurgen Klopp masterminding a 5 - 0 win at Old Trafford and a 7 - 0 victory at Anfield.
