Liverpool and Feyenoord continue negotiations

Richard Hughes is continuing to negotiate with Feyenoord over a compensation package, to allow Arne Slot to become the new Liverpool manager, with the Dutch club said to be holding out for £15million.

Less than 24 hours after Feyenoord manager Arne Slot confirmed that he wants to become the next Liverpool manager, the two clubs are reportedly locked in negotiations for the 45-year Dutch coach, with Feyenoord holding out for a compensation fee of close to £15million.

Reports yesterday evening suggested Liverpool had offered around £9million to Feyenoord, to allow them to begin formal negotiations, but this was rejected.  Fresh reports this morning claim Liverpool have now returned with a new offer, closer to £12million, with talks between the clubs expected to be finalised within hours.

Slot has made no secret of his desire to move to Anfield, and Liverpool have reportedly already agreed the details of his salary and contract, so once the Reds are given the green light by Feyenoord, the final stages of the negotiations can be completed.  That means Slot could be announced as the Red's new manager over the weekend.

Following his TV comments yesterday, Slot led his Feyenoord side to a 3 - 1 victory over the Go Ahead Eagles, a result which guaranteed Feyenoord's place in next season's Champions League, although they remain nine points behind leaders PSV, so are unlikely to add the league title to the Dutch KNVB Cup which they won last week.

After the match, Dutch media reported that the Feyenoord players have been given a week off, with the assumption being that Slot's future will be resolved by the time the players return to training.

Slot impresses Edwards and Hughes

Liverpool's search for a new manager has taken many twists and turns over the past few weeks, with first Xabi Alonso, and then Rubin Amorim seemingly set to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.  Both men have since disappeared from the equation, with Alonso ruling himself out of the running (by staying with Leverkusen), before Amorim seemingly talking himself out of the running, by meeting with West Ham last weekend.

With a lack of other viable options (Nagelsmann is staying with Germany, while De Zerbi did not meet the club's criteria), Edwards and Hughes have moved quickly to secure Arne Slot as their "first-choice" candidate.  And while the 45-year-old may not be a household name in England, he is certainly building a very respectable CV in Holland, as well as playing an attractive, attacking style of football that Liverpool fans will hopefully enjoy watching.

On top of this, Slot is highly regarded for his work with young players, mentoring numerous youngsters from the Feyenoord Academy and turning them into key components of the first team.  This will certainly have appealed to Michael Edwards and FSG, who are always looking for value for money and potential when signing new players, and given the enormous pool of talent already at the Liverpool Academy, Slot will have plenty of players to work with, as he builds a squad capable of challenging next season and beyond.
