Another manager is out of the running to be the next Liverpool boss
BREAKING NEWS | According to Sky Sports, Roberto De Zerbi is no longer among the candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool Manager, with the 44-year-old Italian failing to impress the Liverpool hierachy.
According to Sky Sports, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi will not be the next Liverpool manager.
Despite being one of the favourites to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer, Sky Sports understands that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have decided not to pursue a move for De Zerbi.
This latest development comes as something of a bombshell, with De Zerbi certainly among the early candidates to replace Klopp, with the outgoing Liverpool manager going so far as to claim that De Zerbi was doing an "incredible job" at Brighton, during his post-match comments after Sunday's meeting between the two sides.
In their report, Sky Sports states that De Zerbi was on the Red's original list of candidates to replace Klopp, but that after reviewing and refining the list, De Zerbi is no longer considered a top candidate.
This implies that Edwards and Hughes have reservations about De Zerbi's ability, or they don't think he's the right man to take Liverpool forward. Either way, this information is a bombshell for Liverpool fans, who are still reeling from last week's announcement that Xabi Alonso would be staying with Bayer Leverkusen, effectively ruling himself out of the running to replace Klopp.
The report goes on to suggest that De Zerbi is now top of the list to replace Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich, with the German giants in need of an overhaul after a massively disappointing season in the Bundesliga. Whether Liverpool has decided against entering a bidding war for De Zerbi's services, or whether they have a different name at the top of their list remains to be seen, with further details likely to emerge over the coming hours and days.
Ruben Amorim is the new favourite for the Liverpool job
With Alonso and De Zerbi seemingly out of the running, Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is now the clear favourite to take over at Anfield.
The 39-year-old manager is regarded as one of the brightest managerial prospects in Europe, having guided Sporting to their first league title in 19 years (in 2021), and is on course to repeat the feat this season. In that respect, his journey mirrors that of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, taking a sleeping giant who had not won the title for many years, and developing a team of young, hungry players who have total faith in their manager's abilities.
Of course, there has been no official word from Liverpool that Amorim is their preferred candidate, or whether he would accept the offer of moving to Liverpool, but today's revelation suggests that Edwards and his team are narrowing down their options, and an official announcement might not be too far away.
