Five times Klopp made us believe
As Liverpool attempts to create another piece of history against Atalanta tonight, LFC - Back On Our Perch looks back at five times Jurgen Klopp turned us from 'doubters to believers'.
Jurgen Klopp famously spoke about turning Liverpool fans from 'doubters into believers', but tonight it is the players he needs to convince, as Liverpool seeks to overturn a 3 - 0 first leg deficit against Atalanta in the Europa League Quarter-Finals.
As excitement for tonight's game builds, LFC - Back On Our Perch looks back at five times Klopp made us believe.
1) Liverpool 4 -3 Dortmund (14th April 2016)
First up we have Liverpool taking on Klopp's former Club, Borussia Dortmund, in the Quarter-Finals of the Europa League. With the scores level at one-all after the first leg, Dortmund looked to have taken the game away from Liverpool with two goals in the first ten minutes at Anfield. Origi halved the deficit shortly after halftime, only for Dortmund to score again, meaning Liverpool needed three goals to progress. Coutinho and Sakho duly scored to bring the Reds level, before Dejan Lovren scored an injury winner to send the Kop, and Klopp, wild with excitement. It was a taste of what was to come for Reds fans, with Klopp's mentality monsters never knowing when they were beaten.
2) Liverpool 4 - 0 Barcelona (7th May 2019)
This one really doesn't need any explanation. Three nil down from the first leg, with Messi and Suarez tormenting the Red's defence, Liverpool's Champions League hopes looked dead and buried, especially when key players Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino were ruled out of the second leg at Anfield. But when the odds are against you, it just makes the victory taste even sweeter, and so it was on the 7th of May 2019, when Klopp and his players did the unimaginable - scoring four goals against Barcelona to condemn the Catalan giants to one of their worst European defeats. Trent's quick corner and Origi's finish for the fourth goal is the stuff of legends and will be talked about on the Kop, long after both players have hung up their boots.
3) Norwich 4 - Liverpool 5 (23rd of January 2016)
The first great League comeback under Jurgen Klopp, saw Liverpool snatch a last-minute winner against Norwich City after it looked like the Reds had thrown away three points. In a topsy-turvy game, the Reds took the lead, lost it, retook it, lost it again, and then finally secured the three points when Adam Lallana scored in the 95th minute. It was a sign of things to come and the start of an emotional rollercoaster that Reds fans would live for the next eight years.
4) Liverpool 4 - 3 Fulham (23rd December 2023)
Fast forward to this season and Fulham looked to spoilt Liverpool's Christmas when they took a surprise lead at Anfield with just 10 minutes of the match left. But Klopp's Liverpool are made of sterner stuff, and two stunning strikes from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold ensured Liverpool claimed the win, and kept pace with league leaders Arsenal.
5) Liverpool 7 - 0 Manchester United (5th March 2023)
It may not be a comeback victory, but it is still one of the greatest results in Liverpool's illustrious history.... Klopp's smile, Fernandes's crying like a baby, Firmino scoring in his final appearance against United, this game had it all.
