Liverpool vs Atalanta: Klopp provides huge update on three key players
Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Liverpool manager confirmed that Alisson, Diogo Jota, and Trent Alexander-Arnold may make the squad for tonight's Europa League match.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp provided a huge update on the fitness of key trio Alisson, Diogo Jota, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, suggested the three returning players may be in line for a surprise call-up for tonight's Europa League squad.
It was only a couple of days ago that we reported the three were back in first-team training, so for Klopp to confirm that he is already thinking about including them in his squad is something of a surprise - albeit a very welcome one. And while it's unlikely that any of the three would start tonight's game against Atalanta, simply having them back on the bench will be a huge boost.
It also raises the possibility that one or more of them may get a small run-out towards the end of the game - if the situation allows it - to help them get back up to match fitness.
Asked about the trio, Klopp confirmed that all three had been doing extra training to help improve their fitness ahead of returning,
"So, obviously we didn’t rush it with the boys. You can but we didn’t, that means they did a lot of training by themselves, especially Diogo and Trent, [they] worked as a group for two or three weeks really properly training. So, [they] looked very good yesterday, to be honest."
Liverpool's next game is on Sunday when they welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield, and while we would expect the Reds to be too strong for Palace, even without Alisson, Jota, and Alexander-Arnold, it could be the perfect platform to re-introduce the three, ahead of a very congested schedule at the end of April, with Liverpool playing Fulham, Everton, and West Ham (all away) in the space of just 6 days.
LFC - Back On Our Perch will have the confirmed team news around 7pm tonight.
Atalanta names 23-man squad
Ahead of tonight's game, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has named a 23-man squad, with only defender Giorgio Scalvini missing out through injury. That means Charles De Ketelaere, who has ten goals and six assists this season is fit to start.
Atalanta Squad
Musso, Carnesecchi, Rossi, Toloi, Holm, Hien, Koopmeiners, Pasalic, El Bilal, Lookman, Ederson, De Roon, De Ketelaere, Djimsiti, Bakker, Ruggeri, Kolasinac, Adopo, Hateboer, Bonfanti, Miranchuk, Zappacosta, Scamacca
