Everything you need to know about Atalanta BC

As Liverpool prepares to face Atalanta BC in the Quarter-Finals of the Europa League, LFC - Back On Our Perch brings you everything you need to know about the Italian team, including its history, stadium, players, and honours.

Liverpool returns to the Europa League on Thursday evening, when Italian side Atalanta are the visitors to Anfield, for the first leg of the Quarter-Finals.

Here's everything you need to know about our Italian opponents.

Formed in 1907, Atalanta is one of the oldest clubs in Italy and is based in the City of Bergamo, in the Lombardy region of the country.  The club was created by students attending the Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi High School and was named after the female athlete Atalanta, from Greek Mythology.

At the time, another football team (Football Club Bergamo) already played in the city, and the Italian Football Association refused to recognise Atalanta's status as a professional club.  This changed in 1914, but in 1919, the Italian FA declared that only one team from each city could play in the top division.  As an agreement between Atalanta and FC Bergamo could not be reached, the two teams held a play-off match, which Atalanta won 2 - 0.  Less than a year later, the two teams did merge, forming the current club - Atalanta Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Scherma 1907 - which was subsequently shortened to Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, or Atalanta BC.  The merger also created the club's famous black and blue striped kit and ensured its status as a professional club.

Despite never winning Serie A (Italy's top division), Atalanta is well respected in Italy and is known as the Regina delle provinciali - the Queen of the provincial clubs, to mark the fact that it is one of the most consistent teams not based in a regional capital, such as Milan or Naples, having spent 62 seasons in Serie A.

Atalanta's honours include six Serie B titles, one Serie C title, and the Coppa Italia in 1962-63.

In recent seasons, Atalanta has consistently finished in the top five of Serie A, achieving Europa League and Champions League qualification, with Head Coach Gian Piero Gasperini playing an attacking brand of football, and promoting many players from the clubs youth system.
