Liverpool set new Premier League possession record against Sheffield United
Despite some nervy moments, Liverpool secured a vital 3 – 1 victory over Sheffield United last night, and in the process, broke a Premier League record for the most possession in a game.
It wasn’t pretty, but Liverpool eventually got the job done against a battling Sheffield United at Anfield yesterday, with goals from Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo securing another three points for the Reds, as the pressure builds in the race for the title.
Despite United causing the Reds plenty of problems, especially in the second half, one area of the match that Liverpool dominated was possession, with the Reds setting a new Premier League record, by enjoying 83.1% possession across the whole game.
That beat the previous record, of 83%, which was also set by Liverpool, during a 2 – 0 victory over city rivals Everton in April 2022. Manchester City have also recorded 83% possession, against Swansea City in April 2018.
While Liverpool were always expected to enjoy more possession than their opponents, especially at home, the Reds will need to make better use of that possession in the coming games, when they face stronger opposition, such as Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham, or Aston Villa.
