Liverpool vs Manchester United – Head-to-Head Record

Liverpool vs Manchester United - Head-to-Head Record

Liverpool vs Manchester United - Head-to-Head Record

One of the fiercest rivalries in club football will be renewed later today, as Liverpool and Manchester United face off in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup.

There are many great rivalries in world football, the Milan Derby, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, and Celtic vs Rangers to name but a few.  In English football, however, nothing quite compares to the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United.

It is a rivalry that spans the last 50 years -  but has its roots in the Industrial Revolution, and the evolution of two of the largest cities in Northern England.

Some of the world's greatest players and managers have played for the two clubs, from Dalglish, Gerrard and Salah, to Giggs, Beckham and Cantona.  Between them, the two clubs have won over 120 major honours, with 39 league titles and 20 FA Cups.

Their rivalry will be renewed again later today, as Liverpool travels to Old Trafford to face United in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup.  It will be the 241st meeting between the two teams, with 18 previous meetings in the Cup.

But which team has the better head-to-head record, and do such records and stats have any bearing on today's game?  Read on below to find out...

Liverpool vs Manchester United Head-to-Head Record

Previous meetings: 240
Man Utd wins: 90
Liverpool wins: 81
Draws: 69

FA Cup head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 18
At Old Trafford: 6
At Anfield:5
Neutral Venue: 7
Man United wins: 10
Liverpool wins: 4
Draws: 4

As you can see, United has a slightly better overall head-to-head record and has been more successful in FA Cup meetings between the two sides.  However, most of that success came during the 1990s and early 2000s, when United was dominant under Sir Alex Fergusen.  In more recent seasons, Liverpool have had the upper hand, with Jurgen Klopp masterminding a 5 - 0 win at Old Trafford and a 7 - 0 victory at Anfield.

Strangely, the two sides have never met in the FA Cup Quarter-Finals before, although earlier versions of the competition did not feature a ‘quarter-finals' round, but went straight from the 3rd or 4th round to the semi-finals.

Liverpool have only won one away game at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, back in 1921 (in a 1st round replay), when Liverpool recorded a 2 – 1 victory.  The most recent FA Cup match at Old Trafford ended 3 – 2 to United in January 2021, in the 4th round.
