- Liverpool outplayed by dominant Leeds side
Liverpool's run in the FA Youth Cup is over for another year, as a much-changed - and inexperienced - side lost to Leeds United at Elland Road on Thursday night.
After defeating Fulham 3 - 0 in the previous round, hopes were high that the young Reds would make it through to the Semi-Finals of the competition, however, with so many of the Under-18 players moving up to the first-team squad, Manager Marc Bridge-Wilkinson was forced to field a much less experienced team, with Leeds United taking full advantage.
Playing at Elland Road, in front of 3,500 fans, Leeds made a bright start to the game and went ahead after 34 minutes, when Rhys Chadwick put them in front. It was no more than the home side deserved, although Liverpool can feel a little aggrieved that they were not awarded a penalty for handball shortly before Leeds scored.
Having taken the lead, however, Leeds took control of the game and went 2 - 0 up shortly after halftime, when Freddie Lane nodded in at the back post.
Despite fighting hard, Liverpool were unable to find a way back into the game, with Leeds sealing the victory in the 70th minute when Chadwick got his second of the game. Liverpool did pull a goal back through Kone-Doherty in the final minute, but the night belonged to Leeds.
