Pep Lijnders provides huge injury update

The Liverpool Assistant Manager has confirmed that the Reds will be without a number of first-team players until after the International break in March.

Jurgen Klopp will need all his squad players to step up over the coming weeks after Assistant Manager Pep Lijnders confirmed many of the club's injured players will not return to action until late March!

Speaking with Liverpoolfc.com earlier today, Lijnders confirmed that Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Diogo Jota will not return to first-team action until after the upcoming International break, which takes place between the 18th and 26th of March 2024.

That of course means that all four players are ruled out of the Carabao Cup Final with Chelsea on Sunday.  The news isn't much of a surprise, but it is still disappointing to hear that so many important players will be missing key games in the coming weeks.  It also means all four players will also miss the vital home game against Manchester City on the 10th of March - which could go a long way to deciding the eventual winners of this season's Premier League.

In more positive news, Lijnders confirmed that Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah, and Dominki Szoboszlai may be available for the Final, with all three players set to undergo late fitness tests ahead of the Wembley Final on Sunday.

What did Lijnders say

When asked about the current injury crisis, Lijnders answered,

"We come in a crazy schedule again, so we play every three days. It's important for us to use each minute, use each day to really look how the players are. This is for Mo, Dom and Darwin.

"Two training sessions to go, let's see how they are and then we can make a decision in the last minute.

"And all the others, we know it's longer. Ali has a muscle injury. Trent, LCL. Jota, medial ligament, MCL. Curtis [has] a high ankle sprain. They will be longer out.

"Curtis is probably the first one [to come back] around the international break. All the others will be after the international break."

"All the boys had a day off yesterday but for us a day off means that they come in and they have treatment and, of course, we have to prepare the final.

"But for the boys it's proper recovery, so they all feel the necessity to use [it] in these moments where you play every three days and where certain boys have to play more because of the injuries.

"So, they are treating their body well, they are trying everything to be fresh, to be fit. But you know with our style, how we play, it's important. You have to respect the recovery as much as you respect the performance."
