Six games that will decide this season's title race

The 2023/24 season is reaching an exciting climax, with four teams still in the hunt for the title.  LFC - Back On Our Perch takes a look at six upcoming games that will decide this season's title race.

Fans often look back on one game or moment in a season and say 'That was the moment we won (or lost) the title'.  In reality, of course, a title is won over 38 games, and whilst individual moments can win or lose matches, no single moment can be pinpointed as being the 'key moment'.

That being said, certain games will always take on more significance, especially if they are between teams challenging for the title.  We've therefore selected six upcoming games that will have a massive impact on the title race, and take a look at how those games may play out.

Game 1.  Liverpool vs Manchester City (10 March 2024)
The first game on our list, and perhaps the most important, is Manchester City's visit to Anfield at the start of March.  Many people already had this one down as a title-decider before the season even started, so it is little surprise to see it on our list.  A lot could change between now and the 10th of March, but if Manchester City go into the game still trailing Liverpool in the table, then the pressure will be on them to win.  That would play into Liverpool's hands, with the Reds hitting City on the counter-attack, just as Chelsea did last weekend.  If Liverpool do win this game, it will not seal the title, but it would be a massive step towards it.

Game 2.  Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur (4th May 2024)
By the time we get to May, the title race may have already been decided.  It if hasn't, then Tottenha's visit to Anfield may have the final say in which way the title goes.  On the same weekend, Arsenal are at home to Bournemouth, whilst City are at home to Wolves.  I would expect City and Arsenal to win both their games, so Liverpool would need to beat Tottenham to either maintain their lead or keep pace with whoever is top.  If winning the title is not motivation enough for the Reds, there is also the small matter of the game against Tottenham earlier in the season, where Liverpool were robbed by awful officiating and ended the game with nine men.

Game 3.  Manchester City vs Arsenal (31st March 2024)
The first game on our list that does not involve Liverpool, sees Arsenal travel to the Etihad to face City at the end of March.  Depending on the outcome of the Liverpool vs City match earlier that month, a further defeat may end City's title challenge.  Alternatively, if City beat Liverpool at Anfield and then Arsenal at the Etihad, then the title will likely be theirs once again.  Jurgen Klopp would probably like this one to end in a draw so that both teams drop points.  Just to add a bit of extra pressure to the match, Liverpool play Brighton at Anfield earlier the same day.  If Liverpool beat Brighton, the pressure will well and truly be on City and Arsenal, with neither team wanting to lose.

Game 4. Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City (20th April 2024)
The first of two huge games for Tottenham sees them take on City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.  Tottenham has been something of a bogey side for City in recent seasons, beating them 1 - 0 at home, at the end of last season.  Liverpool play Fulham on the same day, with the Reds heavy favourites to win that game, meaning the pressure will be on Spurs and City not to lose.  A Spurs victory would be the best outcome, but I would settle for a draw and both teams dropping points.

Game 5. Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal (27th April 2024)
The North London derby is always a massive game, but when both teams are potentially going for the title, it becomes even more significant.  Tottenham currently sit 4th in the table, so are the outside bet to win the league, but they will certainly have a big say in where the title ends up.  These games are often feisty and have plenty of goals and red cards.  As with most derbies, form counts for little, so picking a winner is very difficult, but as a Liverpool fan, I would prefer to see a draw, or a Tottenham victory.  If Arsenal do lose this game, it may be the end of their title challenge.

Game 6. Manchester United vs Liverpool (6th April 2024)
We could have picked Liverpool's trip to Goodison Park on the 17th of March, but I'm confident the Reds will beat Everton.  Instead, I've highlighted Liverpool's trip to Old Trafford at the start of April, as a game that may cause us problems.  Not that Liverpool hasn't performed well against United recently, but because United will be doing everything they can to stop us from winning the league, and equaling their record of 20 League Titles.  I'm still confident we can go there and get a result, and if we do, then confidence will be sky-high going into the final month of the season.
