Liverpool regains the advantage in title race after City drop points

Manchester City's draw with Chelsea on Saturday means Liverpool are once again masters of their own destiny, in the race for the Premier League title.

Liverpool and Manchester City have fought some incredible battles over the last few years, with the Reds losing out on the title by a single point on more than one occasion.

After the Reds lost to Arsenal several weeks ago, it looked like a similar fate might befall the club once again.  Although Liverpool remained top of the table, City always had games in hand, meaning they would leapfrog the Reds and lead the table by a single point, if they won those extra games.

However, after City dropped points at home to Chelsea last Saturday, the title race once again swung in Liverpool's favour, with City no longer able to match the Red's points total, even if they win their game in hand.

Of course, the title race is far from over.  There are still 13 games to be played (14 in City's case), and City must visit Anfield in March, in a match that could go a long way to deciding the destination of the title.  But knowing that the title race is back in their hands will be a major boost to Klopp and his players.  It also adds extra pressure to City, Arsenal, and Tottenham, who know they must match or better the Red's results every single week.  City have shown that they can handle that sort of pressure in the past, whereas Arsenal and Tottenham often crumble when the pressure builds (last season being a prime example).

How many points could Liverpool, City, Arsenal, and Spurs win?

It's almost impossible to predict how the rest of the Premier League season will play out, with so many factors to consider.

We could just assume that each team wins all their remaining games, but of course, that is impossible, with Liverpool and City playing each other in March, and Liverpool and Spurs meeting in May.  Manchester City also play Arsenal in March and Tottenham in April.  Arsenal and Tottenham also meet each other at the end of April.

It's quite probable then, that each of the four title-chasing teams will drop points at some stage over the next 13 games.  What is important is how many points they drop, and that is where Liverpool has the advantage.

The Reds know that if they win all their remaining games, they will win the league.  It's as simple as that.  Each of their title rivals knows that as well, which gives Liverpool the advantage in more ways than one.
