When Liverpool confirmed the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, on the 1st January 2023, there were more than a few raised eyebrows.  Firstly, the signing came out of the blue, with most newspaper stories linking Gakpo to our rivals Manchester United, rather than Liverpool.  Then there was Liverpool's midfield crisis, with most experts and fans, expecting Liverpool to use the January transfer window to bolster their midfield options.  Signing a young up and coming attacker was not part of the plan.

Yet one year on, and Gakpo has become an integral part of the team.  His versatilty, playing anywhere across the front three, and dropping deep to link up with the midfield (like Roberto Firmino did), means he is always one of the first names on the teamsheet.  That's why he has already recorded 50 first team appearances in less than a year.

But it's not just his versatility that keeps him in the team.  Gakpo has also contributed 14 goals and 4 assists during his first 50 games.  18 goal contributions in 50 appearances is a good return for a young player.  He may not be at the same level as Salah, but Gakpo has a knack of scoring important goals in big games.

With games coming thick and fast over the next month, and with Salah leaving for the African Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, Gakpo's importance to the team will be more apparent than ever.
