Toulouse Football Club began life in 1937, but the club has been through many dramatic changes during its 90 year history.

First, in 1967, Toulouse sold its players and place in the French Top Division, to Paris side Red Star.  This left the city of Toulouse without a major football team.  However, 3 years later, in 1970, Union Sportive Toulouse was formed.  Playing in red and yellow the club started life in Ligue 2, but by 1979 the club had reclaimed the name Toulouse FC, and in 1982 the club won promotion back to Ligue 1.

Despite the rise of several prominent players - most notably Fabien Barthez - Toulouse bounced up and down the leagues, until, in 2001, the club went bankrupt after being relegated to Ligue 3.

The same year, former Liverpool Sporting Director, Damien Comolli, took control of the club, and within 2 years the club were back in the top flight.  By 2007, Toulouse were back in Europe, facing Liverpool for the first and only time, where the Reds won 5-0 on aggregate.

In recent seasons, Toulouse has flirted with relegation on several occasions, before eventually being relegated in 2020, after the French league was stopped early due to Covid-19.  In July 2020, RedBird Capital purchased a controlling 85% stake in Toulouse.  Redbird Capital also have a small stake in Liverpool FC, through its partnership with FSG.  With the help of RedBird's investment and new management, Toulouse won promotion back to Ligue 1 in 2022, before winning the Coupe de France in 2023.
