Gravenberch praise keeps coming

The young Dutchman is starting to show why Liverpool were happy to pay £35million for his services in the summer.

Pundits and fans alike have been singing the praises of Ryan Gravenberch, after this display in mid-week, with Jamie Carragher the latest to have his say.

Young players are often compared to greats of the past, with fans and pundits quick to label someone as the next Messi or Ronaldo.  Sometimes these comparisons are justified, and sometimes, they add unnecessary pressure to a young person already burdened with their own expectations.

For that reason, I tend to look away when people start comparing Liverpool youngsters to past players.  However, there are cases when the comparisons seem valid, and the latest comments about Ryan Gravenberch definatly fall into that category.

Gravenberch put in a player of the match performance against Union SG in the Europa League in midweek, scoring his first goal and looking lively throughout.  Indeed, the 21-year old is starting to look like the player that became the youngest ever to start and score for Ajax at just 16 years old.

Such performances have led ex-Reds defender, Jamie Carragher, to compare Gravenberch to French Legend - Patrick Vieira.  Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said :

"As for Gravenberch, he hasn’t played as much, you are looking at the potential and thinking it could be something really special there.

You are seeing signs of that, the way he moves and glides past people. There is something there and, if Jurgen Klopp and his staff can make that into something good, we could have a really special player.

Just looking at him, he looks like a footballer: the size, the physique. He reminds me a little bit of Patrick Vieira, that way he glides through with the ball. You can see signs of that."

Vieira was one of the best midfielders to ever grace the Premier League, so if Gravenberch can reach anywhere near that level, Liverpool will have a very special player on their hands indeed.
