During the Man United vs Wolves match on the opening weekend, Hooper missed United keeper punching a wolves player as they contested a high ball, leading to PGMOL apology.

Anyone who watched Liverpool's game against Tottenham on Saturday evening, will have been left stunned and angry by the terrible standard of refereeing on display.  However, perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised, as the match referee - Simon Hooper - had already been removed from official duties earlier in the season - for making serious errors....!

Hooper was the match official when Manchester United played Wolves on the opening weekend of the season.  Late in the game (with United lucky to be 1-0 up), Wolves thought they should have been awarded a penalty, when United keeper, Andre Onana, clattered into a wolves player as he went to head the ball goalwards.  Hooper initially waved play on, before being invited to look at the decision by the VAR official.  After a lengthy discussion, neither official could come to a decision, so the penalty was denied and United went on to win the game.

Wolves Manager Gary O'Neil was then booked by Hooper for protesting the decision.

After the game, PGMOL were quick to issue an apology to Wolves and O'Neil - just as they have with Liverpool - after admitting that Hooper and the VAR team failed to spot the 'clear and obvious error' on the pitch.  Hooper was subsequently stood down from refereeing, and handed VAR duties only, before returning to the middle for Liverpool's game against Aston Villa 2 weeks ago.

PGMOL have already confirmed Hooper and the VAR officials made 'serious errors' in the Liverpool match, with all the officials involved having been stood down from further duties this week or next.

It remains to be seen how the Premier League and PGMOL try to deal with the increasing levels of poor refereeing, and how they try to convince fans that the decisions made in games are correct and accurate.
