Defender Williams joins Blackpool on season long loan deal

Defender Williams joins Blackpool

Young Liverpool defender Rhys Williams has joined Championship side Blackpool on a season long loan, as he looks to gain more first team experience.

The 21-year old has been with Liverpool for 12 years, progressing his way from the U10's, all the way to the first team, where he has made 19 appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side.  Williams was part of the make-shift defence - alongside Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak - that famously helped Liverpool gain Champions League qualification in 20/21, where he started each of the last 5 games.  That was the first time many Liverpool fans had seen Williams play and he earned many good reviews for his style of play and confidence.

Game time hard to come by...

With the return of Van Dijk, Matip and the arrival of Kanote last season, Williams has found game time harder to come by in recent months and spent part of last season on loan at Swansea City.  Williams is highly rated by Klopp and the coaching staff, and there was never any suggestion that the young centre-back would be leaving Liverpool on a permanent deal, in fact he signed a new long term contract only last season.

With Liverpool's senior centre-backs all fit and ready to start the season, and with joe Gomez committing his long term future to the club recently, it was unlikely that Williams would see much action at Liverpool in the upcoming season, so a loan move to a competent Championship side is a good move for all concerned.

Williams will now link up with his new teammates, and continue his pre-season preparations with Blackpool, ahead of the new season starting in a couple of weeks.

LFC - Back On Our Perch wishes Williams all the best for the new season.  We will be providing weekly updates on all Liverpool's loaned players, so check back regularly to see how Williams progresses.
