Liverpool defender joins Rangers, earning Liverpool a tidy profit in the process
Defender Ben Davies has joined Rangers in a permanent deal worth upto £4million. The move brings to a close a strange and frustrating period for the defender, who signed from Preston but never got anywhere near playing for the first team.
Davies was signed in January 2021 as Liverpool were in the midst of an injury crisis, particularly in defence, where all the first choice centre backs were injured. At the time the transfer raised many an eyebrow amongst Liverpool and general football fans alike. Certainly Davies was a steady, dependable defender, maybe even Preston's best player, but to make the jump from Championship to title chasing Liverpool was always going to be tough. In reality Davies was never signed to play for the first team. Jurgen Klopp had already promoted youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Philips, whilst also signing Ozan Kabak on loan. Davies was brought in as another body, someone who could make up the numbers for the subs bench or fill in with the U23's.
It is little surprise then that 18 months later, Davies is leaving Liverpool without a single first team appearance to his name. Last season he spent time on loan at Sheffield Utd, where he put in some good performances and attracted quite a lot of interest. A move during the current transfer window always looked likely and Rangers have now won the race for his signature.
Liverpool fans will not shed any tears over the defenders departure, but they will be very happy to hear the the club stand to make £3.5million from the sale. Davies only cost Liverpool £500,000 back in 2021, and with a guaranteed £3million upfront and a further £1 in add-ons Liverpool can expect to make a tidy profit. Yet again, its a great example of Liverpool's transfer team gaining the maximum profit from every player that leaves Liverpool.
