Liverpool sweat over fitness of key trio with just 21 days until new season

Liverpool sweat over fitness of key trio

Liverpool’s pre-season trip to Asia is complete, and the Reds have now turned their attention to their next pre-season match against RB Leipzig.  Whilst the tour was a resounding success off the pitch, on it Liverpool suffered more injury concerns, with 3 key players now undergoing treatment.

Firstly, as mentioned in our earlier article, Oxlade-Chamberlain has injured his hamstring and is a major doubt for the start of the season.

Further up the pitch, Portuguese striker Diogo Jota has suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury that he picked up at the end of last season.  Jota missed the first game of the tour against Manchester United but was back in contention to face Crystal Palace.  Sadly the striker injured himself in training, with Manager Klopp stating,

“So, Diogo is unlucky. Diogo was not involved [against United] because of an injury he got at the end of his season.

He trained yesterday fully and got injured again, so that’s really not cool but we have to wait for the results. He had further assessment this morning so we have to see.”

Whilst any injury is not good news, at least Liverpool have plenty of options up front with Salah, Diaz and Firmino likely to start.  Youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho can also play further up the field so Jota should not be rushed back into action.

Probably most concerning is the news that goalkeeper Alisson also sustained an injury during the training session.  Klopp confirmed that Alisson left the session early after feeling something and was not risked as a precaution.  No further details have been released so hopefully it is just a minor tweak that needs few days rest.  Should the injury be more serious, Liverpool would be left with only Adrian as their senior goalkeeper, with young Irish Keeper Kelleher also out injured at present.
