On This Day – 14th July - Legends arrive and Mo gets going

On This Day – 14th July

1987 - Peter Beardsley is signed from Newcastle United on this day in 1987 for a fee of £1.9million.  The (then) record British fee was soon justified and the legendary midfielder would go on to make a total of 175 appearances and score 59 goals.  Beardsley later made the short trip across Stanley Park, joining Everton for £1million in August 1991.

1991 - Welsh striker Dean 'Deano' Saunders is signed from Derby County as a direct replacement for Peter Beardsley.  Yet again Liverpool paid a British Record Fee of £2.9million.  Sadly for Saunders his time at Liverpool was short lived, as despite helping the team clinch the FA Cup, he was quickly moved on to Aston Villa in September 1992.  Saunders scored 25 gaols in 61 appearances (which is a very credible record).  Saunders is fondly remembered at Anfield, and the player himself continues to be an avid Reds fan, as witnessed by his enthusiasm when talking about the team on Talksport and BBC 5 Live.

2015 – Liverpool fans were disappointed on this day in 2015 as England International and 'wonderkid' Raheem Sterling completed a £44million move to rivals Manchester City.  Sterling was an influential part of Liverpool's front 3 that so nearly brought the title to Anfield in 2014.  Sadly, disagreements and doubts about Manager Brendon Rogers led Sterling to publicly refuse to sign another contract with Liverpool - even if we offered him £1million a week! - and the young striker soon got his desired move away from Anfield, as cash rich City took advantage of the stand off.  Liverpool made an impressive profit on the player, having signed Sterling for £500,000 from Millwall in 2010, but Reds fans can only wonder at what might have been, if Sterling had stayed and played as part of Jurgen Klopps 'Mentality Monsters'.  Sterling scored 23 goals in 129 games for Liverpool.

2017 – New signing - and future Anfield Legend - Mo Salah scored his first goal in a red shirt as Liverpool played out a 1-1 pre-season friendly with Wigan Athletic.
