Liverpool sign Portuguese Wonderkid
Liverpool have confirmed that Portuguese wonderkid Fabio Carvalho will join then on 1st July after agreeing a deal with Fulham for the 19 year old.
Although Carvalho is technically a free agent after his contract expires at the end of June, Liverpool were keen to agree a deal with Fulham, to stop a tribunal deciding on the teenagers transfer fee. The deal will see Liverpool pay Fulham £5million up front with an additional £2.7million in add-ons, if certain performance based targets are met.
Carvalho had a standout season with Fulham in the Championship, scoring 11 goals as Fulham gained promotion back to the Premier League. Such is his talent that Liverpool wanted to sign Carvalho in January, to stop other clubs agreeing a deal, but the two clubs could not complete the necessary paperwork in time for the deal to be completed. Liverpool's interest never disappeared however, and they continued to negotiate with Fulham until a deal was agreed around mid-march.
With Carvalho already completing a medical in January, and agreeing a 5-year contract, the only thing left to do was formalise the deal with Fulham, which both clubs have now confirmed.
Carvalho will go straight into the Reds first team squad, where he will compete for a spot in midfield, although the youngster can also play anywhere across the front line.
Carvalho has long been regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Europe, and was recently ranked 7th in FourFourTwo's list of most exciting youngsters.
Liverpool fans should be delighted therefore that Klopp and his team have got this deal over the line. It will be very interesting to see how much game time Carvalho gets next season, but the thought of Carvalho, Elliot and Jones running riot in a few years time is very excited indeed.
