Salah becomes Liverpool's all time top Premier League goalscorer

Egyptian King Mo Salah surpasses Robbie Fowler to cement place as all-time great

Published : Monday 6th March 2023

If anyone was in any doubt as to how special a player Mohamad Salah is, then those doubts were well and truly laid to rest, on a remarkable Sunday afternoon at Anfield.

As staff, players and fans of Liverpool, basked in the glory of a 7-0 thrashing of arch enemies Manchester United, one man’s smile shone brighter than all others.  That man was Mo Salah.

Not only had Salah just produced a ‘player of the match’ performance, in what was arguably the greatest league game ever witnessed at Anfield, he had also just broken Robbie Fowler’s record for most Premier League goals for LFC.

With 129 Premier League goals to his name, Salah now sits atop a list of modern-day Liverpool Legends that includes Fowler, Owen, Saurez, Gerrard, Torres and Mane.  Not only that, Salah now also sits 7th on the list of all-time leading goalscorers for Liverpool, moving ahead of Sir Kenny Dalglish, with 178 goals in all competitions.

Liverpool have always been blest with incredible strikers, and the names on the list above proves it.  But what makes Salah’s achievement even more remarkable, is that he plays out wide, and not as an orthodox striker through the middle.  His goals per game ratio is also exceptional, with Salah scoring 129 goals in just 205 games, a ratio of 0.629.  Only Fernando Torres has a better goals/games ratio.

Salah becomes Liverpool's all time top Premier League goalscorer

With Salah still only 30 years of age, and the way he respects and looks after his body, there is no reason to assume that Salah will not still be banging in goals at the highest level for another four or five years at least.

We've already written about what Salah needs to do to catch Ian Rush in the all-time goalscorers list, and although this may be a step too far even for Salah, he will certainly be looking to move up the list and score any goals as possible.  Next on the list, ironically, is Robbie Fowler, with a total of 183 goals from 369 appearances for the Reds.  Salah currently has 178 goals, so it should not be long before Salah is once again surpassing Folwer and breaking his records. After than Steven Gerrard sits 5th on the all-time list, with 186 goals, so it is not unrealistic for Salah to move above both players before the end of the season.
