Salah signs new Liverpool contract

Mohamed Salah has ended months of speculation by signing a new 3 year contract with Liverpool, tying the Egyptian superstar to the Reds until at least 2025.

After nearly 18 months of negotiations - and plenty of negative tweets from his agent - Salah has finally committed his future to Liverpool, ensuring the forward will spent the prime years of his career at Anfield.  It was only a few weeks ago that Salah confirmed that he would be at Anfield next season, but at the time that was seen by many - including us at LFC Back on Our Perch - as confirmation that he intended to see out the last year of his contract before leaving on a free.  Indeed, only yesterday Salah's agent was posting cryptic twitter messages involving laughing emoji's, suggesting that Salah and Liverpool were no closer to agreeing a new deal.  Today's announcement has therefore caught many by surprise - however exciting it is.

Details of the new deal have not been released - other than the 3 year length of the contract - but various news outlets are reporting that the deal is worth a minimum of £350,000 per week, with bonuses for goals and trophies potentially taking the contract nearer to £400,000 per week.  That means the total cost of the deal over 3 years could be upwards of £58million.  Throughout the negotiations, it has been reported that Salah wanted parity with the Premier Leagues other top players, such as Kevin De Bruyne and Christiano Ronaldo who both earn £400,000 a week.  Regardless of where Salah now ranks on the list of top paid Premier League players, he is certainly Liverpool's most highly paid player in history!

In the past Liverpool's owners, FSG, have been reluctant to sanction such large wages, fearing that other top players such as Van Dijk and Alison would also demand new deals, but with fellow forward Sadio Mane leaving over the summer, it would appear that FSG felt compelled to act, to stop another superstar from leaving Liverpool - either this year or next.  Indeed, the sale of Mane last month to Bayern Munich may have been the key to allowing the Salah deal to be completed.  The money raised from the Mane deal has helped pay for half the Darwin Nunez transfer fee, whilst removing Mane from the wage bill has freed us significant funds.  Likewise, the sale of Minamino to Monaco, and Divock Origi's departure to AC Milan on a free transfer has freed up another £160,000 a week.  It is likely that all of these savings will have been ploughed directly into the Salah deal.

Having already secured 3 new signings and new deals for Milner and Salah, it is likely that Liverpool's remaining transfer business will involve outgoing players, but Klopp and FSG have shown that if the right player is available at the right price then anything is possible.  In the meantime, Liverpool fans should enjoy the fact that one of the world's top players has pledged his future to LFC!
