Xabi Alonso leads Leverkusen to historic Bundesliga title
After winning multiple honours during his playing career, Xabi Alonso is now a title-winning manager, after Bayer Leverkusen were confirmed as Bundesliga Champions at the weekend.
Football can be full of irony, and so it proved on Sunday afternoon, for while Liverpool's title challenge ran out of steam against Crystal Palace, the man everyone wanted to replace Jurgen Klopp - Xabi Alonso - was re-writing the record books, after leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen have been favourites to win the title for several weeks, having built up a huge lead over rivals Bayern Munich, but Sunday's 5 - 0 thrashing of Werder Bremen confirmed them as champions, ending years of pain for Levekusen's long-suffering fans.
It also highlighted just why Liverpool were so desperate to secure Alonso as Jurgen Klopp's successor - despite his relative inexperience as a manager.
Sadly for Liverpool and its fans, Alonso rejected the chance to rejoin the Reds (for whom he played between 2004 and 2009), opting instead to stay with Leverkusen for one more season, and while there is still every possibility that Alonso may manage the club at some point in the future, it feels like the club has missed a massive opportunity.
Replacing Klopp will be a massive task for any manager, but in Alonso, the club could have secured a young, hungry manager with all the tools needed to create a new period of success at the club. That job will now fall to someone else, but Liverpool fans will keep one eye on Leverkuen and Alonso next season, as they think about what might have been.
Leverkusen's amazing season
Not only have Leverkusen won the title, but they are on course to go the entire league campaign unbeaten, with just 5 games left to play. They are also yet to taste defeat in German Cup competitions or European games, in what could go down as the greatest season by any team in European football.
Leverkusen season in numbers
League matches played: 29
League matches won: 25
League matches drawn: 4
Total games this season: 43
Total games won: 38
Total games drawn: 5
Total goals scored: 123
Total goals conceded: 31
