Liverpool Injury Update: Jones, Robertson, Matip
Jurgen Klopp has provided positive updates on several Liverpool's injured stars, but there is sad news for one of Klopp's longest serving players, with fears he may never play for the club again.
Jurgen Klopp has been speaking to the press ahead of Liverpool's game against Sheffield United tomorrow evening.
During his news conference, the Reds manager provided numerous updates on the club's injured stars, with plenty of positive news regarding Jones, Robertson, and Bajcetic, which is sure to please the fans. Sadly, the news regarding Joel Matip was less encouraging, with the veteran defender unlikely to play again this season.
Positive news on Jones, Robertson, and co.
Let's begin with the good news, with Klopp confirming that Curtis Jones and Andy Robertson are both back in the match-day squad for tomorrow's game. Neither player is likely to start, but both could feature at some point during the game, to help them get back to match fitness.
Klopp on Curtis Jones,
"Curtis is in training, full training, and is in contention... Curtis is back, that doesn't mean he can play 90 minutes, he can play a few minutes."
Klopp on Andy Robertson,
"Yeah [he's fit], and very important, by the way."
Klopp on Jota, Trent, Alisson, and Bajcetic,
There were also positive updates on long-term absentees, Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, and Stefan Bajcetic, with Klopp confirming the first three were back in group training, while youngster Bajcetic is now in full training with the Under-21 squad.
"The other boys [are] doing well. Diogo and Trent are together in a group, which helps both, but [it] looks like from next week on they will be hopefully in parts of team training, and then we will see the rest."
"Ali is with the goalkeeper coaches, so I just see them through the fence, but that looks good as well. I think in his mind as well, next week parts of team training."
"He [Bajcetic] trains now fully with the U21s this week. That means we will take him in training next week to us and then we will see. Another one coming and that's super-important."
Joel Matip's future is unclear
While the majority of Klopp's updates were positive, for Joel Matip, the news was less encouraging, with the veteran defender now highly unlikely to play again this season. Matip is making good progress in his recovery from a ruptured ACL, but he will not recover in time to play again this season, meaning he will not get the chance to play under Jurgen Klopp before the German leaves Liverpool in the summer.
This is particularly sad for Matip, who was one of Klopp's first signings back in July 2016, joining the Reds on a free transfer from Schalke. Matip has since gone on to make 201 appearances for the Reds, winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and UEFA Super CUP during the last eight years.
The news that Matip will not play again this season only adds to the uncertainty surrounding his future, with the defender's contract expiring in June. Jurgen Klopp has previously spoken about the club "looking after Matip" - presumably by offering him a new contract - but with Klopp moving on as well, it's looking increasingly likely that the club will not offer Matip a new contract, instead looking to bring in a younger, left-sided central defender in the summer.
Does Matip deserve a new contract?
While there is no doubting Matip's loyalty or commitment to LFC, there will be massive changes at Anfield this summer, with a new manager bringing fresh ideas to the club. Will an injured player, the wrong side of 30, be part of those plans, we're not so sure.
Let us know what you think in the comments below. Should Matip get a new contract and finish his career with LFC, or can his wages be better used on a new signing?
