Post-match comments: Klopp, Mac Allister, De Zerbi
Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League after securing a narrow 2 - 1 victory over Brighton at Anfield earlier today. LFC - Back On Our Perch has the best post-match comments from Klopp, Mac Allister, and De Zerbi.
Jurgen Klopp and his players were delighted after their 2 - 1 victory over Brighton, which saw the Reds return to the top of the Premier League.
Today's victory is the first time that Klopp has beaten Roberto De Zerbi and the first time Liverpool has beaten Brighton in three seasons. Following the match, Klopp and Mac Allister spoke to the media, where they discussed the match, the title race, and Liverpool's injured players.
Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day,
"It's all about reacting - if we learn something this year, it's definitely that we can do these things. I don't take it for granted. I would prefer to be 3-0 up early in the game and then 7-0 up after 85 minutes, then I would calm down - unfortunately, that doesn't happen so you have trust in the game and you try to do the right things in the right moments."
"There were so many top performances today - yes, the finishing boots were not exactly fitting but it's not a problem, we scored two and conceded one, and won the game so all good. I can promise you neither Pep or Mikel are in the dressing room at the moment thinking 'oh my God, Liverpool won' - they focus on what they are doing, we focus on what we are doing."
Jurgen Klopp, in his post-match press conference, on Liverpool's positive response to going a goal behind,
"It was, from my point of view, the best performance we had against Roberto [De Zerbi]’s Brighton. More possession, better possession. A really good rhythm in the game – besides the goal, we lose the ball. We can lose the ball high up the pitch, that doesn’t mean you have to concede, that was really well done. Great, great finish as well, as far as I saw it. I liked the reaction a lot but I saw as well in our finishing we were a bit in a rush. That was not the same level like all the rest."
Jurgen Klopp, speaking about Liverpool's winning goal,
"That is an unbelievable ball [from Dominik Szoboszlai]. It is the creativity and the quality, seeing that. He sees Macca, his first touch is incredible and then he sees Mo. How wasteful we were at all the other moments it was good we had this genius football moment to finish the game off."
Jurgen Klopp, commenting on Alexis Mac Allister's performance,
"I saw a lot of special performances today. Yes, Macca was incredible – absolutely incredible – but when you have that kind of talent, when you have that kind of character, then you should show it. It’s Macca, he can do that – so do it. That’s Conor [Bradley], that’s [Jarell] Quansah, that’s Wataru, that’s Dom… they are that good. That’s Joe Gomez. The boys are good, so show it. Yes, I am the biggest fan of these boys but I stopped being surprised if they really perform on the highest level because it is just what I want them to do and then when they do it it’s fine. If they cannot do it then I think about why and how we could help, but when they do it I am not as surprised as others maybe, I am just happy the more often they can do it."
Alexis Mac Allister, speaking to Sky Sports after the match,
"We didn't start as we wanted but it was an amazing game. We played against an unbelievable team. I know them [Brighton] very well, I know what they can do and it was a tough match but in the end we won it and we are very happy."
"I would rather not concede so early but the mentality of the boys is amazing and that is what you need when you are 1-0 down, and today we showed it again. But next time we have to start the game winning, not losing."
Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, on whether any injured players will be back for the Sheffield United game,
"Full training is Curtis [Jones]. So, he trained already with us yesterday but then had extra because the [matchday] minus one session has not the intensity Curtis needed so he was with us and then he had an extra shift. He will be in full training. What does that exactly mean for the game? Let me have a look on that. Nobody else [will return]. The others, slowly but surely [recovering], but not yet."
Brighton manager, Roberto De Zerbi, speaking about his future,
"I am lucky because I have a clear idea and in my life I decide always what I want to do. "I will speak with Tony and the club and we will find a solution together without problems but I know my future and what I want."
"I want to compete and keep my ambition high because my life is football. I want to wake up happy every morning and fight to reach the maximum."
