Liverpool Women lose to Man City

Matt Beard's side suffered a heavy defeat against title-chasing Manchester City Women this afternoon at Prenton Park, going down 4 - 1.

Liverpool Women had a day to forget, as three goals in ten minutes condemned them to a heavy defeat against Manchester City earlier today.

Having lost 5 - 1 to City earlier in the season, and with several key players missing through injury, today's game was always going to be difficult, but the Reds didn't help themselves as they conceded three goals in quick succession, effectively ending the contest before half-time.  City then added a fourth, before Taylor Hinds scored a fine long-range effort to give the Liverpool fans something to cheer about.

The result could have been very different, as Liverpool started the game brightly, forcing several saves from the visiting keeper before City took control of the match with three quick goals.  Liverpool manager Matt Beard responded by making a triple substitution at halftime, but his side were unable to find a way back into the match.

Speaking after the match, Beard admitted the ten-minute spell where City scored was key,

"Of course it was. If you look how well we started. We concede, in my opinion, a sloppy goal – I think we can deal with that. Then we just don’t recover from that moment. We start becoming a little bit hesitant, stop doing what was working well for us in that first 15-minute period. And we got punished; all three goals are preventable from our perspective, rash decisions. It’s frustrating because we’ve had good chances ourselves today. The toughest thing for me is they haven’t had to work hard for the goals, and that’s the most disappointing thing for me."

In happier news, Missy Bo Kearns celebrated her 100th appearance for Liverpool, as she came on as a second-half substitute.

Liverpool Lineup

Laws, Koivisto, Fisk, Bonner (Lawley, 46), Clark, Parry (Hinds, 46), Nagano, Holland (Leath, 90), Höbinger (Kearns, 46), Kiernan (Enderby, 58), Roman H.

Unused substitutes: Micah, Duffy.

Liverpool eyeing strong end to the season

Despite today's heavy defeat, Liverpool manager Matt Beard remained positive, with plenty still to fight for this season.

Speaking after the match, Beard told the Official Liverpool website he was still aiming for a top 4 finish,

"Yeah, of course it is [still the target]. We finished seventh last year – we wanted to improve on that and we have already done that so far this year. Chelsea and Man City are leagues above everyone else in the division, leagues above. You’ve just got to make sure you [don’t] switch off in those moments. We’ve made great progress."

Liverpool remains in fourth place in the Women's Super League, one point ahead of Manchester United, and four ahead of Tottenham, though both teams now have a game in hand on the Reds.  All three teams are pushing for European qualification next season, and with only six games left in the season, it is going to be a fascinating end to the season.
