Paul Tierney will not officiate a Premier League match this weekend after the PGMOL decided to relieve him of his duties, in the wake of the Forest vs Liverpool match last Saturday.  Tierney has been widely criticised for giving the ball to Liverpool after a head injury to Ibrahima Konate, when in fact it should have been given to Forest, as they had control of the ball when the injury occurred.

The Forest players and coaching staff were incensed when Liverpool scored in the 99th minute of the match, claiming that if Liverpool had not been given the ball after the injury, they would not have scored.  What they fail to acknowledge, is that 1 minute and 50 seconds elapsed between the incident and Liverpool scoring through Darwin Nunez.  During that time, both teams won and lost the ball, and it even went out for a throw-in.  If anyone is to blame for Forest losing, it is the Forest players who failed to clear their lines or see out the game.

Now, however, the PGMOL has decided that Tierney should not take control of a match this weekend.  Whether this is a punishment for his 'error', or to protect him from further abuse we will never know.

VAR duties for Tierney

Despite the official not taking centre stage this weekend, he will still be working in the Premier League, as he has been given the role of Video Assistant Referee in the Arsenal vs Brentford match on Monday.

Assuming there are no further controversies in that match (if it's possible to not have a VAR controversy these days), then Tierney will likely return to the middle for the next round of Premier League matches the following weekend.

Whichever side of the argument you sit on regarding this incident, it has once again highlighted the poor standard of refereeing in the Premier League, with Liverpool having plenty of complaints of their own, in both the Forest game and throughout the season.  Sadly, it appears that lessons have not been learnt after the Luis Diaz 'non-goal' at Tottenham earlier in the season, with referee's continuing to make the headlines as often as players.
