Just when Liverpool's injury crisis looked like it couldn't get any worse - it has - with the news that No.1 goalkeeper, Alisson, has suffered a hamstring injury in training, and will not travel with the squad to face Brentford tomorrow.
Jurgen Klopp was already facing several selection problems, with injuries to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mo Salah, Joel Matip, Thiago, and Stefan Bajcetic, hampering his ability to rotate and rest players.
Alisson will now remain on Merseyside and undergo further tests, to discover the extent of the injury. The results of those tests probably won't be known until Monday, so Liverpool fans face an anxious wait to discover how long Alisson will be sidelined.
The Brazilian goalkeeper suffered a similar problem earlier in the season when he was forced off towards the end of Liverpool's 1 - 1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad. That injury resulted in Alisson missing three games.
Liverpool fans will of course have one eye on the Carabao Cup Final, which takes place next Sunday, and whether Alisson will be fit to play in the showpiece event. Backup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher usually plays in Cup matches, and Klopp has often rewarded the youngster with starts in the Final, so it would not be a surprise to see Kelleher start at Wembley, even if Alisson was fit.
Kelleher playing a vital role...
Luckily Liverpool has an excellent backup keeper in Kelleher, as he has proven over numerous seasons, and Klopp will have no problems playing the young Irishman again tomorrow. Indeed, this season has been Kelleher's busiest in a Liverpool shirt, racking up thirteen appearances already. Of those thirteen, three have been in the league, five in Europe, and five in the Carabao Cup. And with Alisson facing further time on the sidelines, Kelleher is likely to get an extended run of games over the next few weeks.
Depending on how long Alisson is out injured he may miss games against :
Luton Town (Premier League - 21st Feb)
Chelsea (Carabao Cup Final - 25th Feb)
Southampton (FA Cup - 28th Feb)
Nottingham Forest (Premier League - 2nd Mar)
Manchester City (Premier League - 10th Mar)
Whilst we have every confidence in Kelleher, it would be great to have Alisson back before the Man City game, as that may well be the game that decides the destination of the PL Title.
