Jurgen Klopp faces a selection headache this weekend, with six first-team players still unavailable through injury, and the Carabao Cup Final just around the corner.
It is a situation that Klopp and Liverpool know well. Having spent most of the last 7 seasons competing on multiple fronts, Klopp is a veteran when it comes to rotating his squad and keeping players fit for key games. And with Liverpool looking to win an unprecedented quadruple, Klopp will need all his players fit and firing over the last three months of the season.
This weekend, Klopp takes his Liverpool side to Brentford. The Reds have played at the Gtech Community Stadium twice before, but are yet to taste victory there. In 2021, the two teams played out an entertaining 3 - 3 draw, while last season the Reds were humbled 3 - 1. Klopp and his players will therefore need a good performance if they are to leave London with three valuable points.
Which brings us to our current injury 'crisis'. Once again Liverpool has a number of first-team players unavailable - as has been the situation for the last 4 weeks. Thankfully, the current Liverpool squad has plenty of strength-in-depth, thanks in no small part to the emergence of exciting youngsters, such as Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley. It's likely both of these players will feature against Brentford, with Klopp keeping one eye on the Carabao Cup Final next Sunday, and the need to protect as many senior players as possible. Klopp also knows Liverpool needs a victory on Saturday, with Manchester City ready to take advantage of any slip-up by the Reds.
Which players are unavailable this weekend?
Liverpool currently has six first-team players injured, with Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, and Stefan Bajcetic on the long-term injured list. Matip will not feature again this season, after rupturing his ACL several months ago. Thiago recently returned from injury, but only lasted ten minutes, before picking up a new problem, while youngster Bajcetic is back in full training, but will not be rushed back into action, due to the nature of the injury problems he has suffered.
Then there is Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai. Both players recently spent time on the sidelines, before returning to action, only to be injured again. Neither player has anything serious, but neither will be rushed back, to prevent any further long-term damage. Thankfully, Conor Bradley has shown that he is more than capable of covering for Arnold at right-back, whilst the Reds have plenty of options in midfield, meaning both players can be afforded the necessary time to heal properly from their injuries.
Last, but certainly not least, Mo Salah is now back in full training, having spent the last 4 weeks on the sidelines, with a muscle tear sustained at the African Cup of Nations. It is highly unlikely that Salah will be risked against Brentford, but Klopp will be hoping his Egyptian King will be back in time for the Carabao Cup Final against Chelsea on the 25th February.
