Deloitte have released their annual Football Rich List, and it makes for interesting reading for Liverpool FC.
The 'Football Rich List' has been compiled by Deloitte for the last 27 years, and analyses a clubs financial strength, taking account all revenue sources, such as match day tickets, broadcast rights, sponsorship deals and merchandise sales.
Liverpool have appeared in the list for each of the 27 years it has been compiled, starting back in 1996-97. At that point, Liverpool were ranked 9th in the world. Liverpool's worst year came in 1999-2000, when the club fell to 19th in the list, behind the likes of Leeds United, Parma, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund and Rangers!
From 2000 through to 2015, Livepool have consistently ranked in the lower end of the Top 10, but since FSG took control of the club, our financial position has improved greatly, with Liverpool climbing as high a 3rd on the list, during the 2021-22 season. Unsurprisingly, a clubs position on the Money League is dirctly linked to their performance on the pitch, with prize money, TV revenue and sponsorship deals all increasing the more succesful a team is.
Poor 2022-23 season costs Liverpool on and off the pitch...
The latest report details the 2022-23 season - which as Reds fans will remember - was less than succesful. A disappointing league campaign saw Liverpool finsh 7th, whilst there were early exits in both comestic cups, and a Quarter Final loss in the Champions League. This has resulted in a drop in revenue from the 2021-22 season, as shown below :
2021-22 Season Revenue : £594.3million
2022-23 Season Revenue : £593.8million
On the face of it, the drop may seem insignificant, at just half a million pounds, but it would be much greater, if it were not for the stellar efforts of the Sales and Marketing team at Anfield. Their efforts have ensured that sponsorship and corporate deals have continued to rise, despite last years dip in form, and owes much to the pulling power of both LFC, Jurgen Klopp and star players such as Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The loss of revenue also means Liverpool have dropped down the Money League, from last seasons 3rd place, to 7th this year. The teams above us have all seen their revenue grow, which is linked to their domestic and European success.
It will be interesting to see how our revenue grows next year, if this season is successful as we all hope it will be...
