Salah suffers injury scare

Salah suffers injury scare

Liverpool and Egypt superstar, Mohamad Salah, was forced off just before half time, during tonight's African Cup of Nations game between Egypt and Ghana.

It was the sight no Liverpool fan wanted to see - Mo Salah sat on the turf, shaking his head, after picking up an injury...

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp will also be sweating, with Liverpool fighting on four fronts, and big games coming thick and fast over the coming weeks.  Losing Salah to the Africn Cup of Nations was bad enough, but losing Salah to injury as well is a double blow!  Atleast Klopp and his coaching team will have the latest medical updates straight from the Egypt camp.  For everyone else, we must wait and hope that the news is good, and that the injury is not serious....

No official information has been released by the Egyptian FA yet, but speaking at his post match press conference, Egypt Manager Rui Vitoria said,

"We don’t know yet what the problem is. I hope it’s not a big problem… I think it’s not dangerous but let’s see."

The injury happened near the end of the first half, as Egypt were on the counter and Salah was bursting forward.  After feeling something in his hamstring, Salah dropped to the turf, as play continued further up the pitch.  After talking with his teammates and then the medical staff, Salah quickly passed the Captains armband to Ahmed Hegazi, indicating that he knew he could not continue.

Egypt making hard work of Group B

Even with Mo Salah fit to start both their opening group matches, Egypt have made hard work of Group B so far, drawing both games two all, against Mozambique and Ghana.  Those results mean Cape Verde can secure top spot in the group if they beat Mozambique tomorrow, leaving Egypt to fight for the second automatic qualifying spot.

Their final group game is against Cape Verde on Monday 22nd Janaury, just five days from now.  It's therefore quite likely that Egypt will go into that game without Salah, making their task even harder.

Of course, should Egypt crash out of the AFCON at the group stage, Salah would be free to return to Liverpool earlier than expected, which would be a bonus for the Reds.  If Salah is injured however, then he still wouldn't be able to play for Liverpool....

For now, all Reds fans can do is hope for positive news about Salah's injury.  Everything else will take care of itself in time...
