As expected, Liverpool's former Captain, Jordan Henderson, was met with a frosty reception from England fans during the recent match at Wembley.
How things can change in a matter of months. Rewind to May 2023 and Jordan Henderson was Captain of Liverpool. Loved by Reds fans, with his place in the Anfield History booked assured, as the Captain who led Liverpool back to the promised land of Premier League and Champions League Winners.
Fast forward back to the persent, and Henderson finds himself caught in a media storm, criticised for his move to Saudi Arabia, booed by England fans, and, in perhaps the most damning indication of his fall from grace, seeing an image of him lifting the Premier League Trophy removed from the walls of the AXA Training Ground.
Reacting to his own fans booing him, Henderson said,
"It's not nice, your own fans [booing]. I love playing for England, I have done for many years, that's why I'm still here."
"I still want to play for England for as long as I possibly can and give everything for the team, for my country."
Henderson, who in the past has been a prominent supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, faces criticism for his decision to leave Liverpool and move to Saudi Arabia, where same-sex relationships are illegal. Many fans feel he has sold out, moving only for the money, and has turned his back on the people he previously supported.
