The statement acknowledges what we could all see on TV, that the Referee and VAR Officials got the decision completely wrong, and worse, that the necessary checks were not completed.
The Referee's body, the PGMOL (Profesional Game Match Officials Limited) has issued a statement shortly after the Tottenham vs Liverpool game ended, confirming that significant human errors were made during the game.
The human error they were specifically talking about was Luis Diaz's disallowed goal for offside, though in truth, there were any number of contentious refereeing decisions that could be investigated. We will discuss the game, and the major refereeing decisions that went against the Reds in coming articles, but for now, the full PGMOL statement can be found below.
"PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham vs Liverpool.
The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.
PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.
PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error."
Statement released 8pm, 30th September 2023
