On This Day - LFC History - 14th July

2023 : Liverpool confirmed the departure of another young defender, with Sepp van den Berg signing a season long loan with Jurgen Klopp's former team Mainz 05.  The deal means van den Berg will spend the entire 2023/24 season in Germany, the 4th year in a row he has been sent out on loan.

2022 : Liverpool confirmed a new 4-year deal with main shirt sponsor, Standard Chartered.  After months of speculation, the Reds agreed to the new deal, meaning Standard Chartered will have been our main sponsor for 17 years by the end of the new deal.  No financial details of the deal were released, but reports prior to the deal being announced suggested Liverpool for looking for upwards of £40million per season.

2021 : Liverpool rejected the chance to defender Ozan Kabak from Schalke.  The Turkish defender had spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with the Reds, but did not do enough to secure a permanent move.  Liverpool rejected the deal, even though Schalke reduced their asking price from £15million to just £8.5million.

2020 : Spanish midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, reportedly put his house in Munich up for sale, as talks of a transfer to Liverpool gathered pace.  For once, the rumours turned out to be true, as the midfielder duely signed for Liverpool later in the summer of 2020.

2019 : A Liverpool 11 defeated Bradford City 3-1, in a pre-season friendly that doubled as a charity match, to raise money for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.  The foundation was setup by former Liverpool defender Stephen Darby, after his own diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease in September of 2018.  Goals from James Milner and Rhian Brewster saw Liverpool home, and kept up their 100% record in pre-season ahead of the 2019/20 season.

2018 : Liverpool fan Sean Cox, who was attacked outside Anfield by AS Roma fans in April 2018, finally regained conscienceness after spending three months in a coma.  Mr Cox was set upon by a group of Roma fans, in the build up to their Champions League clash with Liverpool.  Over the following years, Liverpool fans raised over £2million to help Mr Cox - funding treatments and alterations to his home - and in April 2023 Mr Cox released a video of him learning to walk again.  Three Roma fans were eventually charged and convicted of the burtal attack.

2017 : Mo Salah scored his first goal for the club, in a one-all draw against Wigan Athletic in pre-season.  It was also Salah's first outing for the club.

2016 : Centre-back - and fan favourite - Martin Skrtel ended an 8-year association with Liverpool, as he was sold to Fenerbache for £5.5million.  Skrtel had joined in January 2008 from Zenit St. Petersburg.  The no nonsense defender played 320 games for LFC, scoring 18 goals.  Skrtel lifted the Carling Cup in 2012, scoring in the Final

2015 : Winger Raheem Sterling left Liverpool in acrimonious circumstances, having refused to sign a new contract, or play for Manager Brendan Rodgers again.  Sterling had joined from QPR for £500,000 as a teenager, played 129 games and scored 23 goals for the Reds. He was sold to rivals Man City for an initiall £44million.

2014 :

2013 : Thiago Alcantara joined Bayern Munich from Barcelona for £22million.  During his seven years in Germany, Munich won the Title every season, with Thiago scoring 31 goals in 235 games.

2012 :

2011 : Former Liverpool midfielder Ryan Flynn signed for Sheffield United from Falkirk.  Flynn had started his career at Falkirk, before joing the Reds as a teenager.  Flynn won back to back FA Youth Cups with Liverpool in 2005/6 and 2006/7.  Despite his potential, Flynn never made the grade at Liverpool and moved back to Falkirk in 2009, before joining Sheffield United two years later.  In a career lasting over 18 years, Flynn has made nearly 500 appearances.

2010 : Liverpool confirmed that young duo, Francisco Duran (midfielder) and Nikolay Mihaylov (keeper) had left the club.

2009 :

2008 : Young midfielder, Danny Guthrie, was sold to Newcastle for £2.25million.  Despite high hopes, Guthrie made just seven senior appearances for LFC.

2007 : Liverpool defeated Crewe Alexandria, 3 - 0, in a pre-season friendly.  Ray Putterill, Lee Peltier and Peter Crouch scored.

2006 : Former left-back, Stephen Warnock, celebrated the birth of his daugher, Aisling.

2002 :

2001 : El-Hadji Diouf scored the only goal of the game, as Senegal defeated Morocco in a World Cup Qualifier.  Diouf would join Liverpool in 2002, but despite his obvious talent, his poor attitude and lack of discipline meant he never realised his potential, leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2005. 

2000 : Ex Red - Don Hutchinson - joined Sunderland from Everton, for £2.5million.  He would only last one season on Wearside, before moving back to his former club, West Ham United.

1999 : Jean-Michel Ferri left Liverpool for Sochaux in France, just seven months after joining from Istanbulspor.  Signed by Gerard Houllier for £1.8million, the midfielder failed to impress and made just 2 sub appearances.

The football landscape changes forever as the Premier League is founded.  Created by the top 20 clubs in the English First Division - including Liverpool, the breakaway league takes advantage of enormous television rights deals, to attract the best players and managers to the English game.

1992 :

1991 : Welsh forward Dean Saunders signed from Deby County for a then British record fee of £2.9million.  He was purchased as a replacement for the outgoing Peter Beardsley.  Despite scoring 25 goals in 61 appearances, Saunders was moved on after just a year, signing for Aston Villa.

1989 :

1988 : Oyvind Leonhardsen scored his only goal for Norway Under-17's, in a 3 - 1 defeat to Finland.  Leonhardsen would join Liverpool from Wimbledon in 1997.

1987 : Peter Beardsley joined LFC from Newcastle United, for a then record fee of £1.9million.  Beardsley formed part of the legendary LFC team of the late eighties, playing 175 times and scoring 59 goals. He left in August 1991, when Graeme Souness sold him to Everton for £1million.

1981 : Future Reds Legend, John Barnes, signed for Watford from non league Sudbury Court.  Barnes made 292 appearances for Watford, scoring 83 goals, before he joined Liverpool in 1988

1976 : Former Reds player - Keith Burkinshaw - was appointed Manager of Tottenham Hotspur.  He would spend eight years with Tottenham, leading them to two FA Cup victories and a the UEFA Cup.

1975 : Joey Jones joined the Reds from Wrexham on 14th July 1975.  The full back made 100 appearances.  During his time at Anfield he won a European Cup, two league titles and the Charity Shield. Jones rejoined Wrexham in 1978 for £210,000
