Jarell Quansah wants to become "a Champion with Liverpool"
After committing his long-term future to the club, young defender Jarell Quansah has stated his desire to "become a Champion with Liverpool", and is looking forward to continuing his development under new coach Arne Slot.
The 21-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal yesterday, in what fans will hope is the first of many new contracts handed out to Liverpool's key players.
With key stars Trent Alexander Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, and Mo Salah out of contract next summer, Liverpool fans have eagerly awaited news of new contracts over the last few weeks. So when news broke yesterday that a long-term contract had been agreed with one of the Red's first-team defenders, many hoped that it meant Virgil Van Dijk had penned a new deal. But instead of the veteran central defender, it was one of Liverpool's youngsters - Jarell Quansah - who had agreed on a new contract.
Jarell Quansah to continue a journey that started at age 5
That's not to say that everyone at LFC - Back On Our Perch wasn't excited to hear that Quansah has committed his future to the club. After all, the 21-year-old has massive potential and has become a key part of the Red's first team over the last 15 months. So knowing that the England Under-21 International is staying at Anfield for the next 4 or 5 years is welcome news.
It also shows that Liverpool's hierarchy (including Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes) is working hard behind the scenes on many projects, not just the contracts for Trent, Salah, and Van Dijk.
Quansah's meteoric rise
Yesterday's new deal caps an incredible 12 months for Quansah, which has seen him go from promising Academy player to first-team regular. Last season, under the guidance of former manager Jurgen Klopp, Quansah formed an excellent partnership with Captain Virgil Van Dijk, becoming the club's first-choice centre-back pairing, in the absence of Konate and Gomez. Quansah was also part of the team that lifted the Carabao Cup back in February, in the famous victory over Chelsea, which saw 5 Academy players feature in the final.
No better place to be than Liverpool
Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.com, Quansah spoke of his pride at agreeing the new deal, as well as his desire to keep improving, and win more trophies with Liverpool,
"I couldn’t be happier at this minute. I think the way the new manager has come in, his coaching style has definitely been a massive part of that and I think it is the best club in the world for me to develop at and become a better player. I think the players around me, who I’m looking to work hard off and listen to, I think they’re the best in the position at the minute. So, like I said, there is probably no better place I could be."
"There was never any thought of any other club, just because of the environment we have at the minute as well. I think we’re building, definitely, a winning environment, like we saw last year when we were able to lift a trophy, and I think there are a lot of players here who have still got a bit of unfinished business left, who definitely want to win titles – and that’s ultimately what I want to do as well. I want to be known as a champion, I want to be a winner, and I think Liverpool is the best place for me at this moment."
