Liverpool FC Weekly Review - 7th October 2024
LFC - Back On Our Perch looks back over another successful week of football for the men's, women's, and academy sides.
Arne Slot's team maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League table with Victory over Crystal Palace, while Matt Beard's women's team recorded their first victory in the WSL.
Another week of football is complete, with many of our players preparing to join up with their national teams, ahead of the second International break of the season. Arne Slot's side won't be in action again until the 20th of October when Chelsea are the visitors to Anfield, but Reds fans can at least enjoy looking at the Premier League table for the next two weeks, with Liverpool sitting pretty, one point ahead of Manchester City.
Solid defense provides foundation for Liverpool's success
Liverpool recorded their fifth clean sheet of the season on Saturday, beating Crystal Palace one-nil at Selhurst Park, a result that ensured the Reds stayed top of the table. Diogo Jota scored the only goal of the game, but it was the Red's solid defence that made the headlines.
The result, and clean sheet, mean the Reds have only conceded two goals in seven Premier League matches. They have the best defensive record in the league, and the best goal difference, with +11.
Arne Slot also achieved a personal record on Saturday, as he now has a better defensive record (after seven games) than Jurgen Klopp achieved in his eight seasons at Anfield. Not bad for your first few months in charge! You can read more about Slot's impressive start to life on Merseyside here.
Liverpool also secured a second victory in the Champions League in mid-week, beating Italian side Bologna 2 - 0 at Anfield. The result sees Liverpool move up to fifth in the CL table, with the Reds looking well-placed to reach the knock-out stages of the competition. Mohamad Salah scored Liverpool's second goal of the game and set a new record for the most goals scored by an African player in the competition.
Liverpool FC Women secure first win on the season
It's been a frustrating start to the 2024/25 Women's Super League for Matt Beard and the LFC Women's team, having drawn both their opening games, despite the Reds taking the lead in both games. On Saturday, however, the Women got their first victory of the season, with a dramatic 3 - 2 victory over Tottenham, thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Marie Hobinger.
The Reds had twice taken the lead through goals from Cornelia Kapocs and a Hobinger free-kick, only for Tottenham to force their way back into the game. And with time running out, it looked like Matt Beard's side would have to settle for another draw, only for Tottenham defender Ashleigh Neville to foul Sophie Roman Haug as she rose to meet a cross into the box. The referee duly awarded a penalty, which Hobinger calmly scored, to send Liverpool home victorious. The result moves the team up to 5th in the table, two points off top spot.
Liverpool FC Women will now play Manchester City on the 13th of October, with the match being played at Anfield.
Young Reds inflict more misery on Man Utd
Liverpool's Under-21s piled more misery on old rivals Manchester United, as Tyler Morton's goal earned the Reds a 1 - 0 victory in Premier League 2. The result moves Liverpool up to second in the table, level on points with Man City, and West Ham.
Elsewhere, Liverpool under-18s recorded a 2 -1 victory over Bologna in the UEFA Youth League, thanks to goals from Ranel Young and Amara Nallo.
