Arne Slot era starts with a win

Liverpool overcame a stubborn Ipswich Town to record another opening-day victory, thanks to second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mo Salah.

After a disappointing first half, Liverpool exploited their host’s inexperience with two quick-fire goals, to ensure Arne Slot’s reign got off to the perfect start.

Another Premier League season is up and running, with Liverpool making the perfect start to life under Arne Slot.

An opening day trip to newly promoted Ipswich Town was never going to be easy, especially as the Ipswich fans have been waiting over 20 years to get back into the top flight, but Liverpool were both professional and ruthless in equal measure, ensuring there were no early slip-ups in what will be another fiercely contested Premier League title race.

Filling the massive hole left by Jurgen Klopp would never be easy, but if the early indications are anything to go by, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes may have pulled off a masterstroke in appointing former Feyenoord coach Arne Slot.

Slow Start – but plenty of quality on show

There have been plenty of headlines written about Liverpool’s lack of signings in recent days, but there is an abundance of talent for Slot to work with in this Liverpool squad, with Salah, Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Jota all looking back to their best at Portman Road.

That’s not to say that everything went to plan for Liverpool’s new coach, with the Reds losing too many aerial challenges in the first half, as well as lacking a real cutting edge up front.  Unhappy with what he had witnessed Liverpool’s new Head Coach demonstrated his ruthless side, replacing young central defender Jarrel Quansah with Ibrahima Konate at half-time.  Speaking after the game, Slot said the team's problems were not solely down to Quansah, but he proved on day one that he is not afraid to make big decisions, or change tactics and personnel if he is not happy with how the game is progressing.

Arne Slot confident Liverpool will make signings

Slot, and the Liverpool hierarchy, are still confident of making new signings before the end of the transfer window, but the Red's second-half display, and the quick interplay between Alexander-Arnold, Szoboszlai, and Salah had fans and pundits purring in delight and suggested that the current squad is more than good enough to challenge on all fronts again this season.

Indeed, with the wealth of attacking talent in Liverpool’s squad, as well as numerous youngsters coming through the Academy, it is hard to see where the squad can be enhanced, although a ‘world-class’ no.6 would be top of the list, but as Liverpool have already discovered this summer, such players are in short supply.

It would not be surprising then to see Liverpool end the summer transfer window with no new signings, despite Slot's assurances to the contrary, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes unlikely to 'splash the cash' just for the sake of it.  You only need to look at Chelsea and their crazy approach to transfers' to see that spending large sums of money on random players will not win you anything.

Tougher challenges lie ahead for Slot and his players, but if the Reds can overcome Brentford at Anfield next week, and avoid defeat at Old Trafford, then we could be in for another very exciting, and successful, season!
