Andy Robertson suffers Euro disappointment
Andy Robertson's Scotland endured a difficult night on Friday, losing 5 - 1 to hosts Germany in the opening game of Euro 2024.
After much hype and buildup in recent weeks, Scotland's Euro dreams suffered a severe setback yesterday as the Tartan Army was outclassed by a young German side, with the heavy defeat leaving their chances of progressing hanging in the balance.
After weeks of hype and buildup, Euro 2024 is finally here, as Europe's 24 best teams battle for the title of European Champions.
But while Germany's tournament couldn't have started much better, for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, yesterday's game was another humbling experience, as his Scotland side produced a disappointing performance that leaves their chances of progressing from Group A in real doubt.
With Germany struggling pre-tournament and under pressure as the tournament hosts, many expected Scotland to provide a tough test, but just 20 minutes into the game the Scots were 2 - 0 down and looking totally out of their depth, as goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala gave the hosts an early lead. Things only got worse for the Scots as the first half wore on, with Kai Havertz scoring from the penalty spot after Ryan Porteous was sent off for a dangerous two-footed lunge.
The red card and third goal killed the game as far as Scotland was concerned, although they got a consolation goal in the 87th minute when Antonio Rudiger deflected the ball into his own net.
Scotland's next game is against Switzerland on Wednesday the 19th of June, before they play their final group game against Hungary on June 23rd.
Another defeat will almost certainly see them eliminated from the tournament at the group stages, which would benefit Liverpool, as it would mean Andy Robertson playing fewer games over the summer, and give him more time to recover ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Andy Robertson sorry for 'hugely disappointing' performance
Speaking after the match, Scotland Captain Andy Robertson pulled no punches in his interview with ITV and shared how disappointed all the players were for themselves and the travelling Scottish fans.
"First half, we just got it all wrong really, didn't show up, weren't aggressive enough, and we let good players get on the ball."
"Second half, we're down to 10 men and I thought lads dug in really well."
"We're so well backed over here, today was hugely disappointing. We have to bounce back quickly because there was lots wrong here and it’s a quick turnaround now."
"Maybe it's a reminder of how tough this tournament is."
"Their big players showed up and were excellent all over the park and had an answer for pretty much everything we had."
"I don't think we’ve played to our maximum. We have to dust ourselves down and go again."
