Liverpool FC marks 39th Anniversary of the Heysel Disaster

Liverpool Football Club has today marked the 39th Anniversary of the Heysel Stadium Disaster, when 39 Juventus fans tragically died minutes before the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus.

Club Ambassador Ian Rush and LFC CEO Billy Hogan led the tributes at Anfield, while flags were flown at half-mast across the city.

Liverpool Football Club today marked the 39th Anniversary of the Heysel Stadium Disaster when 39 people (mostly Juventus fans) tragically lost their lives at the 1985 European Cup Final.

On the evening of May 29th, 1985, Liverpool and Juventus faced off for the biggest prize in European Football, at the ageing Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

Despite concerns about the poor state of the stadium, which was in desperate need of repair, the match went ahead as planned, but tensions between the rival fans, who were separated by just a few metres of fencing, spilled over into violence, eventually resulting in a crush that caused part of a crumbling wall to collapse, causing the majority of the deaths.

Marking the Anniversary earlier today at Anfield, Club Ambassador Ian Rush, and CEO Billy Hogan, laid a wreath at the Heysel Memorial, while flags across the city of Liverpool were flown at half-mast.

Speaking to the club website, Billy Hogan stated,

"We come together on this day as a club to pay our respects to the 39 people who lost their lives at Heysel and remember all those affected by this tragedy."

"Our thoughts are with the families, and everyone affected on this poignant day that will forever be an important part of the club's history."
